Aabhla Collection: Modern Lipan Kaam Decor
Bringing the ancient mud and mirror craft of Kutch into your home with modular, functional wall art.
The Aabhla collection shown as a vibrant wall installation. The composition of red and blue circular forms, including a mirror, shelves, and a wall planter, creates a playful and artistic statement piece inspired by Indian craft.
Here, two pieces from the Aabhla collection serve as functional decor in a bedroom. A circular yellow shelf and a white wall planter add a pop of color and utility next to the bed, showcasing the collection's versatility.
The source of our inspiration: a traditional Bhunga hut in Kutch, decorated with Lipan Kaam. The intricate circular motifs and embedded mirrors crafted by Rabari women are the direct influence for our Aabhla product line.
About Aabhla Collection: Modern Decor from Indian Crafts
Each 10 to 14 inch circular module is finished with a tactile clay plaster that mimics the raw beauty of Kutch mud work, designed for easy flush-mounting with concealed back brackets. You can mix and match these units—choosing from glass mirrors, functional shelves, or planters—to create a wall composition that serves as both art and daily storage.
Our Aabhla collection is an attempt to translate the intricate Lipan Kaam of Kutch into a language that speaks to modern living. Inspired by the mud and mirror work traditionally crafted by the Rabari community, we have re-engineered these forms to be modular, durable, and adaptable to contemporary home interiors.
The Anatomy of the Piece
Every module starts with a composite base, coated in a hand-finished, textured clay plaster. We stick to a matte earth-tone palette—Terracotta Red, Ochre Yellow, and Grey—to ground the pieces in their organic roots. These aren't mass-produced items; they carry the subtle quirks and variations of hand-finished surfaces, which we believe adds to their character.
Configuration and Utility
Because each unit is independent, you can move away from static wall art. You might pair a mirror module with a small shelf near your entryway for keys, or group multiple planter modules in a living room to bring a touch of green to a vertical surface. The concealed mounting system keeps the focus entirely on the craft, allowing the circle to float slightly off the wall.
Why it Matters
We often look to traditional crafts not just for their aesthetic, but for the 'in-between' spaces they create—the places where we stop, interact, and observe. Integrating an element like Aabhla into your home is our way of inviting that slow, deliberate pace into your daily environment. These pieces are designed to be part of your living canvas, evolving as your needs and space change over time.
M9 Design Studio
At M9 Design Studio, we look for ways to let traditional stories live in contemporary spaces. When we designed the Aabhla collection, we didn't want to create museum pieces, but rather functional art that shifts with your daily routine.
