A Home That Glows: Layered Lighting Design Tour
See how professional layered lighting transforms a home from a simple space into an inviting retreat. This personal project tour explains how to use ambient, task, and accent lighting to make your home feel alive.
This video is a deep dive into my personal residence, which I designed to be a living portfolio of my work. I walk you through each room, explaining the specific choices behind the cove lighting, the focused beams on sculptures, and the integrated joinery lights that bring the kitchen to life.
About A Home That Glows: A Personal Project Tour
Instead of just lighting the floor, notice how I highlight vertical surfaces like walls, artwork, and textures. By creating focus points on your walls, the entire room feels instantly larger and more spacious. It shifts the eye away from just the furniture and creates a deeper, more layered ambience throughout your home.
In this residence, lighting is not just a utility, it is the primary interior feature. My design process centers on the 'layering' technique. This involves balancing three distinct tiers: ambient lighting for the base glow, task lighting for functionality, and accent lighting to create character.
For example, in the kitchen, I avoid relying on a single overhead source. Instead, I use joinery lighting to illuminate the backsplash and bar shelves, making the textures of the cabinetry pop while ensuring the countertop remains bright for cooking. This keeps the space functional but warm.
The master bedroom takes a different turn. Here, the priority is comfort. I use soft uplights directed at textured wallpaper, which creates a gentle wash of light. By eliminating harsh downlights, we achieve a moody, relaxed atmosphere perfect for winding down.
Finally, the exterior approach creates what I call the 'lantern effect.' By planning how light spills from the interior onto the facade, the house becomes a warm beacon at night. This is not just about brightness, it is about architectural impact. Whether you are looking for specific scene settings like 'Movie Night' or need technical lux-level simulations for a workspace, I translate these high-level design concepts into actionable CAD layouts and automation logic.
