Lighting Design Process: From Concept Sketches to Reality
Great lighting does not happen by accident. It starts with a conversation and a sketch. See how I transform initial ideas into the final, layered reality at spaces like the Bangalore Golf Club.
The first step is always the idea. This initial concept sketch for the BGC bar shows my thought process, mapping out how to use verticality, indirect light, and focused pools of light to shape the experience.
Next, the concept is translated into a detailed lighting render. This visualization for the BGC bar helped the client see exactly how the layers of light, from the column uplights to the central pendants, would come together to create the desired atmosphere.
The final result at the Bangalore Golf Club bar, where the initial concept and render have been brought to life. The finished space perfectly captures the intended mood, proving how crucial a well-planned lighting strategy is to achieving the design vision.
About From Concept to Reality
The most common mistake is ignoring the site's natural shadow play before finalizing the plan. I start with hand-drawn sketches to map how light interacts with your specific walls and textures, not just a generic grid. This ensures the final output at your venue feels intentional, guiding the eye exactly where you want it rather than just filling a room with brightness.
Mapping the Light
My process begins with a conversation about how you want people to feel in your space. We start with concept sketches that define the volume of light, where we want darkness, where we want focus, and how we handle glare. This is not just decoration, it is structural planning.
Visualizing Before Building
Once the narrative is set, we create detailed lighting renders. These are not just images, they are technical maps. By simulating the environment, we can check how light hits a bar counter or how wall grazing affects a specific texture. This allows us to adjust color temperatures, such as 2700K or 3000K, and beam angles before a single fixture is installed.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Collaboration is the final, crucial step. I work alongside your interior designers and architects to ensure the electrical grid is ready for the technical specs. Whether it is concealing LED strips in joinery or calculating lux levels for safety, the focus remains on execution. When the final fixture is focused, the space does not just brighten up, it changes character, becoming a place where the atmosphere feels designed from the ground up.
