About Write & Direct: Storytelling Workshops
These aren't dry classroom lectures. Whether it’s our Script to Screen filmmaking camp or a creative writing session with published authors, every workshop is designed to get kids actually doing the work. They will walk away with tangible projects—like a finished short film, a portfolio piece, or a published poem—that they have crafted from scratch.
From Concept to Creation
We believe the best way to learn is by doing. Our Write & Direct cluster focuses on moving kids from consuming stories to creating them. We host these sessions at our GK-2 space, turning our bookstore into a hub for young filmmakers, poets, and writers.
Filmmaking: Script to Screen
For teens aged 13-18, we run intensive filmmaking camps. We don't just talk about cinema; we guide them through the entire production pipeline. This includes:
- Pre-production: Scriptwriting, storyboarding, and character development.
- Production: Hands-on camera work and direction.
- Post-production: Basics of editing to bring their vision to life.
Students finish these camps with a complete short film for their portfolios and, in some cases, the opportunity to screen their work at festivals.
Creative Writing & Poetry
For our younger readers (and older ones too), we host workshops led by published authors and experienced educators like Hema Ramanathan and Parnika Shrotriya. We avoid formulaic teaching. Instead, we use:
- Prompts: Interactive journals to spark imagination.
- Technique: Tips on sensory poetry, character arcs, and dialogue.
- Peer Review: Sharing work in a safe, non-judgmental environment to build confidence.
What to Expect
Most of our skill camps run for 5 days, from Monday to Friday, lasting about 2 to 3 hours daily. This structure allows us to dive deep into a topic without burning out the kids. All materials—from stationery to filming equipment—are provided. We prioritize small group sizes to ensure every child gets mentorship time with the facilitator.
