A soft, hauntingly beautiful pinhole portrait. The long exposure required for this technique often captures a sense of stillness and introspection, revealing a different side of the subject.

About Timeless Portraits: The Wet Plate Experience

Each session is a 45-minute collaboration where you sit for a portrait that actually lasts. Because this is a chemical process involving pouring liquid collodion onto glass or metal, you will see your own image emerge right in the darkroom. The final plate will have unique chemical marks and textures that digital cameras cannot replicate, making your portrait a true one-of-a-kind keepsake.

When you choose a wet plate collodion session, you are stepping away from the instant gratification of digital photography. We use a large format bellows camera from a bygone era, requiring you to hold your pose for 6 to 10 seconds. This stillness is part of the experience—it forces you to pause, breathe, and connect with the moment.

The chemistry is temperamental and beautiful. We pour the collodion by hand, sensitize the plate, expose it, and develop it immediately. You will be in the room with us as the silver image appears on the plate. No two plates look the same because the chemicals interact differently every time, leaving behind delicate vignettes or subtle streaks that define the portrait's character.

We typically work with 4x5 inch formats, offering a choice between glass (Ambrotype) or metal (Tintype) plates, depending on our current stock. Every portrait is hand-varnished to ensure it lasts for generations. If you are looking for a portrait that feels like a family heirloom rather than a fleeting social media post, we are here to walk you through the process. Whether you are an artist, a musician, or just curious about analog history, our Cooke Town studio doors are open.
