Antique Art Restoration: Before & After Transformations
I breathe life back into faded, torn, and aging oil paintings. From chemical cleaning to structural canvas repair, here is how I preserve and restore your cherished heirlooms.
A side-by-side digital composite showing how I restore a faded and damaged portrait to its original state. This technique revives the subject's expression and features, demonstrating the power of art conservation.
This image shows a half-restored portrait on a heavily damaged and torn canvas. It demonstrates how even art in the most fragile condition can be saved and its beauty recovered through patient work.
An example of a common problem I fix. This antique portrait from 1935 arrived at my studio with significant scratches and paint loss obscuring the face, a typical starting point for my restoration projects.
The final result of a detailed restoration. This 1935 portrait is now vibrant and stable, with the subject's character fully restored, preserving a piece of Indian history for future generations.
About Before & After Transformations
Restoration is never a quick fix; it is a careful recovery. I don't just paint over the damage. I work thread-by-thread to stabilize the canvas, strip away years of yellowed varnish, and meticulously match the original artist's technique to bring back the expression and character that time stripped away.
How I Restore Your Art
I treat every piece—whether a family portrait or a historical painting—with the same respect I show our Tulunadu traditions. My process is slow and calculated, designed to maintain the khubsurti (beauty) of the original work while ensuring it lasts for another lifetime.
1. Surface Cleaning For paintings dulled by time, smoke, or dust, I perform a deep chemical cleaning. I test solvents first to ensure paint stability, then remove oxidized varnish layers that turn your art yellow and brown. I finish this with a conservation-grade, non-yellowing varnish to seal and protect the surface.
2. Paint Consolidation & Crack Filling If your portrait has cracks, flaking paint, or missing chips, I stabilize the piece. I inject conservation adhesives to re-adhere loose paint and flatten raised flakes with controlled heat. I then use precise in-painting to match colors and textures, so the repair blends seamlessly with the original work.
3. Structural Canvas Repair For heavy damage like tears, rot, or sagging, I offer structural reconstruction. This involves thread-by-thread mending or full lining to provide a new support for the brittle, old canvas. I also handle stretcher bar repairs to ensure the frame stays square and protects the artwork from future impact.
Why Restore?
Restoring a painting isn't just about the aesthetics; it is about preserving history. Whether it is a piece from 1935 or a more recent memory that has suffered damage, my goal is to return the art to you looking as close to its original state as possible. I provide photo and video documentation of every stage so you can see the progress of your piece in my studio in Mangalore.
