My Restoration Process
I treat every antique canvas like a piece of living history. My process is slow and careful, focusing on stabilizing your artwork and bringing back its original character.
A look at my hands-on technique. I am using a fine brush for inpainting on a vintage canvas, with a digital reference image to guide the conservation work and ensure historical accuracy.
This is the kind of challenge I love. A close-up of an old portrait with extensive flaking and paint loss, showing the condition before my conservation work begins.
This portrait shows typical damage from age, with abrasions and discoloration across the surface. My process begins with a thorough assessment of this kind of damage to plan the best restoration approach.
About My Restoration Process
If you have an old painting with flaking paint or a torn canvas, send me a clear image first. I perform a digital assessment to check paint stability, such as solvent testing, before we decide on the best path forward. I will walk you through each step, from cleaning accumulated grime to structural lining, so you know exactly how I plan to save your piece.
How I Approach Restoration
I believe art restoration is about respect. Whether it is a family portrait from 1935 or an antique landscape, my job is to stop the damage and bring the colors back to life without losing the artist's original touch. I don't do quick fixes.
The Process
1. Digital Assessment Everything starts with a look. You send me photos of the damage, and I evaluate if the piece needs simple cleaning or structural repair. This saves us both time and helps set expectations.
2. Cleaning and Solvent Testing Old paintings usually have layers of oxidized varnish, soot, and dust. I do spot testing with specific solvents to ensure your paint stays secure while I remove the grime. Once clean, I apply a reversible, conservation-grade varnish to protect the surface.
3. Consolidation and Filling If the paint is flaking or cracking, I use conservation adhesives to stabilize the surface. I fill deep cracks or missing pigment areas using specialized putty, then retouch the spots with fine brushes to match the surrounding colors perfectly.
4. Structural Repair For torn or rotting canvases, I offer thread-by-thread mending or full lining. This strengthens the structure from the back, ensuring the painting can handle the future.
My studio in Kudla is equipped for these detailed tasks, but I accept artwork from across India. Every painting has a story, and I am here to make sure it keeps telling that story for years to come.
