Antique Portrait Restoration and Conservation
I bring faded family history back to life. My process focuses on stabilizing damaged canvases and reviving the original colors of antique oil portraits, ensuring your heirlooms last for generations.
A restored oil on canvas portrait of an Indian gentleman from 1935. The conservation process revived the deep colors of his turban and the subtle details of his expression, making the piece look as it did decades ago.
This restored portrait of a revered guru now sits in my Mangalore studio. The focus of this conservation project was on preserving the serene expression and the delicate texture of the white beard and robes.
About Restored Portrait Gallery
When you see cracks or yellowing on a vintage oil painting, it is usually oxidized varnish or a failing canvas. I do not believe in quick fixes. My process involves careful chemical solvent testing and layer-by-layer cleaning to strip away years of grime without touching the original paint. Whether it is a 1935 family portrait or a heritage piece, I work one brushstroke at a time to ensure the khubsurti remains intact.
My Approach to Conservation
Art tells a story, and my job is to make sure that story doesn't fade away. I treat every restoration project as a respectful interaction with history. My studio is in Mangalore, but I receive canvases from all over India, ensuring that art—no matter where it is located—gets a new lease on life.
The Restoration Process
I handle three primary types of restoration:
- Cleaning & Varnish Renewal: This is for paintings that look dark or grimy. I use specialized solvents to carefully remove soot, dust, and oxidized varnish layers that turn yellow or brown over time. I finish with a reversible conservation-grade varnish to protect the surface.
- Stabilization & Filling: For canvases with flaking paint or cracks, I inject conservation adhesives to fix the paint to the canvas. I use fine brushes for in-painting to match the original pigments without painting over the artist's original work.
- Structural Repair: For torn or rotting canvases, I perform thread-by-thread mending or full lining, where I attach the original brittle canvas to a new, stable support.
Why Trust Me With Your Art?
I don't offer generic service. I provide digital assessments based on images you share, so we know exactly what is needed before any work begins. I also provide photo and video documentation of the cleaning stages, so you can see exactly how your portrait is being treated. I am not satisfied until the original spirit of the painting is clear again.
