Timeless Black & White Portraiture

Stripping away color forces us to see the subject, not just the outfit. In these sessions, we focus entirely on the interplay of light and shadow, letting the raw emotion of the portrait take centre stage.

A series of black and white portraits that celebrate the beauty of simplicity. Using a single light source, the focus is on form, contour, and the quiet confidence of the subject.

An image from my "HAIR" series, where hair is treated as a sculptural element. The intricate styling and ethereal costume create a fantastical, bird-like creature in this fine art portrait.

A black and white portrait from the "HAIR" series, where the model is enveloped in a dress made of sculpted mesh. The image plays with transparency, structure, and form.

An experimental piece from the "HAIR" series. The model wears a dress made from a fan of color swatches, creating a bold graphic element in this otherwise minimalist black and white world.

A simple, elegant black and white portrait overlaid with a quote from Dorothea Lange. It reflects my belief that the camera is an instrument for learning how to see the world differently.

A surreal, golden-toned image of a resting angel, which I have also rendered in black and white for a different mood. The concept blends mythology with a fine art landscape.

A layered, abstract portrait in black and white. The use of translucent fabric over the face creates a mysterious and thought-provoking image about perception and hidden emotions.

About this collection

Working in monochrome requires discipline. I typically shoot with a single light source to sculpt the face, focusing on textures and raw expressions rather than relying on heavy color editing. It is about distilling a scene down to its most honest element, much like the process behind my 'HAIR' series where styling and light become the primary narrative.

For me, monochrome is not a filter; it is a way of seeing. When I strip away the distraction of color, I am forced to look deeper at the texture of skin, the structure of hair, and the intensity of a gaze. This is the core of my black and white work, where we treat styling as sculpture and light as a chisel.

My process is built on the philosophy that less is more. For these sessions, I utilize the Fujifilm GFX 100MP system. This large-format technology allows me to capture incredible detail in the highlights and shadows, which is critical when you cannot rely on hue to differentiate between elements. Whether we are shooting in my Lower Parel studio or on a custom location, the setup is deliberate. We often work with a single, controlled light source, precisely positioned to highlight bone structure and mood.

Collaboration is the heartbeat of these images. A successful black and white shoot relies heavily on the synergy between the subject, the stylist, and the makeup artist. We spend time before the shutter clicks to ensure the makeup supports a natural look or a high-concept editorial vision, depending on what we are creating. I work with a dedicated technical team to manage the lighting and digital workflow on set, ensuring that what you see on the monitor is as close to the final print as possible. If you are looking for imagery that feels timeless rather than trendy, let us talk about your concept.

I believe the camera is an instrument that teaches us how to see without one. My approach to black and white photography is about finding the quiet strength in every subject, stripping away the noise to reveal the raw form underneath.
