Calm in the City: Impulse Control Training
Is your dog easily distracted by every bike, pigeon, or pedestrian in Bengaluru? I help your pup learn to stay calm and focused amidst the urban chaos, turning noisy streets into a training ground for better manners.
Caesar is doing an amazing job holding his 'stay' in a busy apartment parking lot at night. People are walking all around him, but he remains calm and focused. This is a crucial skill for any dog living in a city environment.
Impulse control can be tough. Here, Amber is learning to resist the urge to chase pigeons and a rolling ball. It takes a lot of patience from both the dog and the human, but we are definitely getting there.
"Doing nothing is an art," and little Milo is mastering it. Here he is on a basketball court, practicing his 'stay' for a longer duration while I walk around him. This builds his ability to stay calm and settled outdoors.
This was Blaze's first time training in a more distracting space, the apartment hallway. He did so well holding his 'stay' as I walked away and even disappeared for a moment. This is a big step towards building confidence outside the home.
Even indoors, distractions are everywhere. Little Pebble, an Indie dog, is holding her 'stay' perfectly while her brother has an energetic online soccer class in the same room. This shows how we can proof commands in any environment.
About Calm in the City: Impulse Control Training
Impulse control is not about suppressing your dog's energy, but teaching them to choose focus over reaction. In these sessions, we move beyond quiet living rooms and into your reality—busy parking lots, common areas, or local parks. We use a long line to safely manage their freedom, ensuring your dog learns to ignore triggers like traffic and other animals without feeling anxious or restricted.
Living in a dense city like Bengaluru is exciting, but it can be overwhelming for a dog. If your pup lunges at motorbikes or struggles to settle down when visitors arrive, it is usually a sign they need help with impulse control. This training is about building a foundation of trust where your dog looks to you for guidance, even when the environment is loud and chaotic.
How We Build Calm
- Real-World Distraction Training: We do not rely on sterile classroom settings. We train where you live. Whether it is your apartment hallway or a busy park in Koramangala or Indiranagar, we introduce real-world triggers like construction noise and running kids at a distance your dog can handle.
- The Power of the 'Stay': We teach your dog that 'stay' means staying until released, regardless of what is happening around them. We start small, gradually increasing distance and distractions so your dog succeeds more often than they fail.
- Positive Reinforcement: We never punish reactivity. Instead, we reward the choice to disengage from a trigger. When your dog sees a pigeon and chooses to look at you instead, that is a massive win that we celebrate with high-value treats.
Why Consistency Matters
Training is not just about the hour we spend together; it is about how you communicate with your dog during the other 23 hours of the day. I will coach you on how to spot stress signals before they turn into reactions. By keeping our sessions short, fun, and high-energy, we keep your dog excited about learning. Whether you have a high-drive breed or a timid puppy, we tailor the approach to fit their specific vibe, ensuring they become a confident, well-behaved city companion.
