Find your voice amidst the quiet of the Kumaon hills. Our Satkhol retreat offers the space, silence, and community you need to finally write that story.

As featured in Condé Nast Traveller, our homestay is purpose-built for writers. This room, with its large windows overlooking the forest, offers the perfect blend of comfort and inspiration.

Wake up to this. The panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks from our retreat is a constant source of awe and inspiration for our participants.

The sky puts on a show every evening. A spectacular sunset over the Kumaon hills, a perfect moment for quiet reflection after a day of writing and learning.

Our outdoor seating area, crafted from local stone and wood, is a popular spot for group discussions, morning tea, or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

The retreat is designed to blend with its natural surroundings. This is one of our cottages, nestled amidst lush greenery, offering a private and tranquil space for our guests.

A look inside one of our cozy single rooms. Complete with a comfortable bed, a writing desk, and a bookshelf, it's your personal space to create and reflect.

The book lounge at our retreat, featuring a hanging chair and a wood-burning stove. It's a warm and inviting space for reading, writing, and connecting with fellow book lovers.

A misty morning walk. The path leading to the retreat shrouded in fog, capturing the quiet, mystical charm of the mountains.

The retreat grounds at night. The warm glow from the common area invites you in after a day of exploring your inner and outer worlds.

The view from one of our rooms at dusk. The mountains don't discriminate, they don't deceive, and they don't leave. They just are.

About The Retreat: A Himalayan Haven for Creatives

You might come to our Satkhol retreat expecting to produce a polished manuscript, but most people leave with something more valuable: clarity. We strip away the city noise and the daily friction, leaving you with nothing but your notebook, our library, and a small group of people who are also trying to figure it out. It is not about writing perfectly here, it is about writing honestly.

We chose Satkhol for a specific reason. The Kumaon hills offer the kind of silence you cannot find in the city, the kind that forces you to listen to your own thoughts rather than the constant hum of notifications. Whether you are joining our intensive writing masterclasses or the Healing Through Writing workshops led by Dr. Vandita Dubey, our goal remains the same: to give you the structure you need to get the work done.

The Environment

We are a small-cohort operation, capping each retreat at 10 participants. This keeps the group dynamics intimate and the feedback focused. Each room is designed for the solo creator, featuring views of the forest or the Himalayan peaks, a solid writing desk, and total quiet. There is no television, no room service, and no pressure to perform. You get a space to think, home-cooked Kumaoni meals, and trails that wind through the forest when you need to walk off a block.

Clinical Support & Craft

Our Healing Through Writing sessions are not about literary awards. They are about using expressive writing as a tool for emotional regulation. Dr. Vandita brings her 25 years of clinical psychology experience to ensure that the process is safe and structured. If you are here for a masterclass, you are learning from published authors and industry experts who care about craft, not theory. We push for messy first drafts because that is the only way to move forward.

Practicalities

Getting to Satkhol is part of the journey. Most guests take a train or flight to Kathgodam or Pantnagar and hire a taxi for the final leg. Once you arrive, everything is taken care of. We provide a full board, including morning tea and evening coffee, so you never have to worry about logistics. Your only job is to show up for your words.

I am Chetan Mahajan, and we built this place because I know that writers do not need more advice—they need space. We handle the logistics, the structure, and the community, so you can stop procrastinating and start writing.
