Yonjuu: Build Math Confidence Through Play
Yonjuu is a tactile card game designed to make numbers visible. From basic addition to complex algebra, I created this tool to help learners see, touch, and understand the logic behind math, removing the fear of rote memorization.
My son Kai and I demonstrate how to play Level 1 of Yonjuu, a math card game I created. This video shows the core of my philosophy: making learning a fun, engaging, and collaborative experience for families. The game is designed to build number sense and strategic thinking in a playful way.
This video provides a step-by-step tutorial for my math game, Yonjuu. I created it to transform abstract concepts into a tangible, strategic card game that strengthens number sense and logical reasoning for learners of all ages.
A short video demonstrating how to use Yonjuu cards to visualize multiplication. Instead of memorizing tables, learners can see '4 times 3' as four groups of three, building deep conceptual understanding.
This video explains how to use Yonjuu cards for addition and subtraction with numbers greater than five. The 'make a ten' strategy shown here is a powerful mental math technique that the visual cards help to solidify.
A glowing recommendation for Yonjuu from mathematician Dr. James Tanton. It's an honor to have my game recognized for its ability to build a strong foundation in arithmetic through fun and fluency practice.
A close-up of the Yonjuu game box and cards. I designed the packaging and cards to be tactile and visually appealing, making the learning experience enjoyable from the moment you open the box.
A video of a child using Yonjuu cards to learn 'partners of 5' (number combinations that add up to 5). This foundational skill is crucial for developing number sense and fluency in addition and subtraction.
About this collection
Yonjuu isn't just another set of flashcards. It is a tool designed to fix the gap between abstract numbers and real understanding. When you hold these cards, you are not just reciting facts; you are seeing 'partners of 10' and visualizing magnitude through the ten-frame design on every card. Whether your child is struggling with basic addition or you are looking for a visual way to explain multiplication, these cards change the conversation from 'what is the answer' to 'how does this number work'.
Math anxiety often comes from being forced to memorize rules before understanding the concept. I designed Yonjuu to reverse that experience. The deck uses a clean, ten-frame layout across four distinct colors to help learners see, touch, and group numbers.
This approach is rooted in the Science of Reading and Math Sense methodologies. When a child sees the number eight on a card, they don't just see a digit. They see eight distinct shapes that need two more to complete a ten. This visual clarity helps build 'Number Sense,' which is the foundation for everything that comes later—from place value and skip counting to multiplication and even complex algebra.
The game is incredibly versatile. We use it for:
- Building addition and subtraction fluency (making pairs of 10 is a game-changer for early learners).
- Visualizing multiplication as groups of objects rather than rote tables.
- Developing critical thinking and logic through the core card game mechanics.
Yonjuu works because it meets the learner where they are. Whether you are a parent sitting at the kitchen table helping with homework, or a teacher looking for a hands-on activity for a classroom of 30, the game provides a tangible way to build confidence. It takes the pressure off the 'right answer' and puts the focus on the pattern and the process. The game is designed for ages 3 and up, and we have variations for every stage of learning, ensuring that as your child grows, the game grows with them.
Hattennoki
I'm Jaspreet. After years of teaching, I realized that kids don't need more worksheets; they need to hold ideas in their hands. I created Yonjuu because I wanted my own son and others to see math as a playground rather than a place to be afraid.
