How to put up Diwali lights in Bengaluru
What Diwali lights cost, whether to rent or buy them, who puts them up and what to settle before anyone climbs, in eight questions.
What do Diwali lights cost in Bengaluru, for a balcony, a house or a building?
Diwali lights here run from about ₹700 for a balcony you light yourself to about ₹2 lakh, AI estimate, for one face of an apartment tower lit from the terrace down. The price depends on how much gets lit, and how high someone has to climb. A two-floor house front is about ₹5,000 to ₹17,000 for Diwali's five nights, by our estimate, whether you buy the lights and pay an electrician or a lighting firm brings its own. How much you light and whose lights you buy move it most: a foot of rice lights, the tiny twinkling kind, works out at about ₹4 at Glimmer Lightings and about ₹16 at Harold Electricals, from their string prices. What a lighting firm, a decorator or a tower crew charges is an AI estimate, because we found no published price for a job of a stated size.
About ₹700 to ₹2,600
A balcony, lit yourself
Two strings of rice lights with hooks and a cord, by our estimate. An electrician for one day, to put them up and take them down, adds about ₹1,100 at the state's minimum wage
About ₹5,000 to ₹17,000
The front of a house, outlined
Every edge, each window and the gate, about 60 m; strings hanging down from the terrace, as in the picture, take it to 100 m and the top of the range. Buying and hiring a lighting firm cost about the same for five nights: our estimate for buying, an AI estimate for the firm
About ₹20,000 to ₹70,000
A villa and its garden, styled by a decorator
AI estimate, for five nights. Curtains of light down the front, wrapped trees, a canopy over the lawn and lanterns at the gate, all in one warm white
About ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh
An apartment tower, lit from the terrace down
AI estimate, for five nights. A lighting firm's long strings dropped down one face of a 15-floor tower, and the gate outlined. The crew's days at height are the biggest part of it
Should I rent Diwali lights, or buy them and pay someone to put them up?
For Diwali's five nights on a house front, renting and buying come out about the same by our estimate, at about ₹5,000 to ₹17,000. Buy if you'll light up again next year, or keep them on till New Year. Rent if you want it done and taken away, with nothing to store. A rented set is charged for every day you keep it. Lights you bought cost mostly the hands next year, with no new set to buy: about ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 for an electrician and a helper, by our estimate. At the bottom you get the edges, windows and gate outlined, about 60 m. The top adds strings hanging down from the terrace, about 100 m in all, so the whole front glows. Ask which one a quote is for.
What should an electrician charge to put up Diwali lights?
Ask for his day rate and how many days he needs. A balcony is one visit up and one down, about a day's pay in all. A two-floor house front takes him and a helper a day and a half to three days, by our guess. No electrician we found publishes a festive price. At the state's minimum wage, the least an employer can pay, an electrician is about ₹1,090 a day and a helper ₹900, so a house front comes to about ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 at that floor, by our estimate. He sets his own rate, often above that in Diwali week.
Which Diwali lights should I buy, and how many metres?
Rice lights do most jobs: the tiny twinkling kind, about ₹4 to ₹16 a foot. To know how many, measure every edge you want lit in feet, add the run to the plug point, and divide by 3.3 for metres. A 10 ft balcony takes about 25 m. A two-floor house front takes 60 to 100 m. A big-bulb string costs 10 to 50 times as much a foot, so keep it for a terrace or a doorway where people sit.
Can my society or landlord stop me putting up Diwali lights?
Yes, so get your society's or landlord's OK in writing before you pay anyone. Beyond them, we found no rule that makes you ask anyone before putting lights on your own flat or house.
Is it safe to run Diwali lights on my home wiring, and what if they trip in the rain?
Yes, the load is small. By our estimate, 100 m of LED string draws about 60 W. In the rain the weak points are the plug and the controller, so keep every one under cover. Press the test button on your RCCB before the lights go up.
Who pays if a worker putting up Diwali lights gets hurt, or the lights catch fire?
Ask the firm to put in writing who pays before anyone climbs. Lucky Light House's FAQ doesn't say who pays.
What should a Diwali lighting quote include, so there are no extra charges?
Get one total that names the metres or floors, the kind of light, the nights and the day it comes down. Two quotes for one house can be for different jobs. Ask what isn't listed and whether it costs extra.
Before you pay for Diwali lights, settle these six
- The metres or floors, and who measures
- The kind and colour of light, steady or blinking
- The nights, and the day they come down
- Who brings the ladder, the power and transport
- Who pays if a worker's hurt or the lights are damaged
- The advance, and a name to call on Diwali night
