How to plan a balcony garden in Bengaluru
The nursery has never seen your balcony. So we asked six Bengaluru nurseries and garden firms what keeps a balcony garden going, from what a monthly visit costs to replacing plants that die, and read the 53 requests people sent us. Here's what will grow in your light and what it costs.
How much sun does my balcony get, and what will grow in it?
Watch the spot where the pots will stand on a clear day, and note when the sun first reaches it and when it leaves. Five hours or more suits hibiscus, bougainvillea, tomatoes and chillies. Three to five suits vinca and portulaca. Under three, grow leafy plants like money plant and snake plant. An east balcony gets the gentler morning sun and a west one the hard afternoon sun. In Bengaluru a north-facing balcony gets direct sun from late April to mid-August and little the rest of the year, and a south-facing one gets it the rest of the year, most of all from October to February.

What does a balcony garden cost in Bengaluru, and should I do it myself or pay someone?
For a dozen pots on a balcony with a few hours of sun, you don't need a designer. Twelve small nursery plants with pots and potting mix cost about ₹2,200 to ₹4,100 if you pot them yourself, or about ₹3,100 to ₹6,500 if a mali buys and pots them, by our estimate. Pay someone to plan it when the light is poor, when you want it to look planned, or when nobody's home to water. That starts at about ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. From ₹50,000 you're paying for a build, like a floor or seating.
One balcony at each budget
A plain balcony: old floor tiles and a railing with a net. The drying rack and the AC unit have to stay.
About ₹2,200 to ₹4,100 yourself, our estimate
Small nursery plants in plain pots along the railing, potted by you. A mali who buys and pots them brings it to about ₹3,100 to ₹6,500. The rack and the AC unit stay as they are.
About ₹190 to ₹350 a pot with its plant and mix
About ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 to start
Planned for your sun: bigger planters at different heights, a palm in the corner, ferns on two stands and hanging plants, set up in a day. The floor stays as it is.
PlantPets says to start around ₹15,000 to ₹20,000
From ₹50,000
A build: grass over the floor, a wooden panel on one wall with planter boxes on it, and the rack folded flat against the panel. The plants are the smallest part of the bill.
Sqft Farm and Ahava Garden start at ₹50,000
Send us a photo of your balcony and we'll draw yours.
Why do two gardeners quote so differently for the same balcony?
The extra buys the look: matching planters, stands that put plants at different heights, and someone who delivers and places it all. The plants cost much the same either way. PlantPets told us that a ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 budget only stretches to plastic planters, and that her balconies start at ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. You can buy the planters and stands yourself.
More plants, mixed pots

Grouped by height, pots that match
PlantPets sorted a balcony of about 100 mixed planters into this: one corner, a wall shelf, a clear floor
How much does balcony garden maintenance cost a month?
Looking after a dozen pots yourself costs a few hundred rupees a month in manure and the odd new plant. Paying someone runs from about ₹1,000 a month for a small balcony near one gardener to ₹3,999 for a nursery's monthly plan, and they come to prune, feed and check for pests, so you still water. Over a year, even ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 a month is ₹12,000 to ₹24,000, as much as a planned setup. Maintenance is sold separately, so you can buy the setup and skip the plan.
Who waters my balcony plants when I'm away, and what does it cost?
Someone nearby is the cheapest answer: your house help, the building's housekeeping staff or mali, or a neighbour, for a favour or about ₹200 to ₹500 a visit by our estimate. Then set the balcony up so the plants can go longer between visits, for example with self-watering pots. A drip kit costs about ₹1,500 to ₹3,000, a timer may be extra, and it needs a tap on the balcony. In summer a hibiscus wants water every day and most pots every two or three days.
Is a vertical garden on my balcony worth the money?
For most flats, no. A living wall costs about ₹550 to ₹2,000 a square foot from Bengaluru firms, so a 6 by 4 ft wall is about ₹13,000 to ₹48,000, and it needs a tap, a drip line and someone checking both. Filling the same wall with pots costs about as much as a cheaper living wall, but you can start with a few, water them by hand and take them when you move. A living wall is worth it on a wall you own and look at every day, with water already there and someone to look after it.
Will balcony pots leak onto the flat below, damage the floor or fall?
Stand every pot on a saucer raised on small feet, keep pots back from the edge, and tip out the saucers every few days. That keeps water off the flat below and stops mosquitoes breeding. A dozen pots weigh far less than a balcony is built to carry. A built-in bed of wet soil is the heavy thing, and needs your builder's or an engineer's yes. Keep every pot inside the railing, never on top of the wall or hung outside it.
If my plants die in the first month, will the gardener or nursery replace them?
With the three providers in the table below, at most 30 days, and usually only when the fault is theirs. So before you pay, agree what counts as their fault and get the replacement terms in writing. We found nothing saying a mali or a nursery counter replaces plants, so if you buy yourself, plan on losing one or two and buy a spare.
Before you pay, settle these six
- How many hours of direct sun the balcony gets, and that the plants suit it
- What the quote covers: plants, pots, stands, soil, delivery and GST
- How tall the plants will be
- The replacement window, and what counts as their fault, in writing
- Who waters when you're away
- What a maintenance visit includes, and whether you want one
What Bengaluru people asked us for
Requests to mytribe, in our words.
Want us to find one?
The hard part is the first few weeks. Plants picked for the wrong sun, or left with nobody to water them, are the ones that die, and a nursery counter can't see your balcony.
Tell us once instead. Send your balcony's sun, size and budget. We come back with the nurseries and gardeners who fit, each priced for your balcony, with their own past work. We already know them: we've checked their real work and their prices, and called their past clients, including about what went wrong. Only about 1 in 10 who apply get in, and every one is re-checked at least every six months. How we verify
Every booking comes with an agreement on what's included and what it costs. It's free for you. The gardener or nursery pays mytribe a small fee when you book, and you pay them directly, at the same price as going to them yourself. If something isn't going to plan, a person here sorts it out.
The same chat answers questions about your plants, like what will grow in your light or whether a quote is fair. This guide is about Bengaluru; for another city, ask on the same number.
