# How to plan a balcony garden in Bengaluru

The nursery has never seen your balcony. So we asked six Bengaluru nurseries and garden firms what keeps a balcony garden going, from what a monthly visit costs to replacing plants that die, and read the 53 requests people sent us. Here's what will grow in your light and what it costs.

53 balcony garden requests · 6 providers · Updated 11 Oct 2026

Prices are what each provider told us or a business published. Where we hold none, the figure is our estimate from its parts and says so. Check every price when you book.

## Q1. How much sun does my balcony get, and what will grow in it?

**Watch the spot where the pots will stand on a clear day, and note when the sun first reaches it and when it leaves. Five hours or more suits hibiscus, bougainvillea, tomatoes and chillies. Three to five suits vinca and portulaca. Under three, grow leafy plants like money plant and snake plant.** An east balcony gets the gentler morning sun and a west one the hard afternoon sun. In Bengaluru a north-facing balcony gets direct sun from late April to mid-August and little the rest of the year, and a south-facing one gets it the rest of the year, most of all from October to February.

| Direct sun a day | What grows |
|---|---|
| 5 hours or more | Hibiscus, bougainvillea, tulsi, marigold. Tomatoes, chillies and most herbs need this much |
| 3 to 5 hours | Vinca, portulaca, cuphea. Flowers that don't need full sun |
| Under 3 hours | Money plant, snake plant, peace lily. Leaves, few flowers, no tomatoes |

From one online plant shop's guide to Bengaluru weather (April 2026) and a Better India article on Bengaluru gardens (July 2025). The low-light plants are the usual ones on gardening blogs.

**Count it again when the season turns.** Bengaluru sits about 13 degrees north of the equator, and the sun is straight overhead at noon on 25 April and again on 18 August. Between those dates the midday sun is to the north, so a north-facing balcony gets direct sun. For the other eight months a south-facing one does if it's open to the sky; under the balcony above, mostly from October to February. A gardening book from Europe that says north means shade is wrong here. And the balcony above yours blocks more of the high midday sun than you'd think.

**Which way does your balcony face?**

- **North** (Sun late April to mid-August): **Open to the sky, it gets direct sun from late April to mid-August, and little the rest of the year.** For those months the midday sun is to the north here. Under the balcony above, only pots at the railing get it, mostly May to July, so pick plants that take shade.
- **South** (Sun October to February): **Under the balcony above, as most are, it gets sun from October to February, and almost none from late April to mid-August.** Open to the sky, it gets sun from mid-August to late April.
- **East** (Morning sun all year): **Morning sun all year, the gentler kind.** It is gone by about noon, so count the hours: five or more suits hibiscus and bougainvillea, three to five suits vinca and portulaca.
- **West** (Hard afternoon sun): **Hard afternoon sun all year, hottest from March to May.** It suits sun lovers like bougainvillea, hibiscus and ixora. Leafy plants scorch here without shade.
- **Not sure** (Watch it on a clear day): **Watch the spot where the pots will stand on a clear day.** Note when the sun first reaches it and when it leaves. Five hours or more suits hibiscus and bougainvillea; under three, money plant and snake plant.

Her caption says this mix of flowering and leafy plants can take the harsh west sun. Photo: PlantPets.

**Bring new plants into hard sun slowly.** Nursery plants grow under shade net, so even a sun plant can scorch in its first week on a hot west balcony. Keep it in the shadier corner for a few days first.

**Roses want a sunny south or west balcony.** PlantPets suggests creeper or button roses there, in as big a planter as you can fit, because they flower more and are easier to keep than the usual kind.

- [Video: PlantPets on why creeper and button roses suit a sunny balcony, with one in flower in a tall planter. PlantPets posted it, filmed at a client's balcony.](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/raw:1/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/c6fde245-be3c-4a69-9f0b-14916a76493f) Video: PlantPets.

**A balcony with no direct sun grows leaves slowly.** Money plant and snake plant will live there, but expect few flowers. For flowers in that light, PlantPets reaches for hoyas:

> "If you don't have direct sunlight, don't have time for maintenance but love flowering plants, look no further, hoyas are our go to plants."
>
> [Keerthi Gilla, PlantPets](https://mytribe.in/plantpets_bangalore), in an Instagram post's caption, August 2025.

**Herbs and vegetables need your sunniest spot.** A Better India article on Bengaluru gardens suggests tulsi, marigold, amaranth and drumstick, which cope with heat and short dry spells. With less than five hours you'll get leaves and few tomatoes, however well you water. Grow bags are a cheap way to start.

## Q2. What does a balcony garden cost in Bengaluru, and should I do it myself or pay someone?

**For a dozen pots on a balcony with a few hours of sun, you don't need a designer. Twelve small nursery plants with pots and potting mix cost about ₹2,200 to ₹4,100 if you pot them yourself, or about ₹3,100 to ₹6,500 if a mali buys and pots them, by our estimate.** Pay someone to plan it when the light is poor, when you want it to look planned, or when nobody's home to water. That starts at about ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. From ₹50,000 you're paying for a build, like a floor or seating.

**One balcony at each budget**

The same spot at each step, from as it is up: each step's price, what it adds and its picture.

- **As it is:** A plain balcony: old floor tiles and a railing with a net. The drying rack and the AC unit have to stay. ![An illustration of a small, bare Bengaluru apartment balcony: beige floor tiles, a black railing with a net, a drying rack with clothes on the left wall and an AC outdoor unit in the far corner](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/050616ce-cf3f-4da4-a9a9-5c0a6f3f75ee)
- **₹2,200+ (About ₹2,200 to ₹4,100 yourself, our estimate):** Small nursery plants in plain pots along the railing, potted by you. A mali who buys and pots them brings it to about ₹3,100 to ₹6,500. The rack and the AC unit stay as they are. About ₹190 to ₹350 a pot with its plant and mix. ![The same balcony with small plants in pots in a row along the foot of the railing and a bag of potting mix by the door](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/6b897b97-c121-4c04-a0c8-215a931edd07) Pick id: `spot:one-balcony-at-each-budget:2`.
- **₹15,000+ (About ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 to start):** Planned for your sun: bigger planters at different heights, a palm in the corner, ferns on two stands and hanging plants, set up in a day. The floor stays as it is. PlantPets says to start around ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. ![The same balcony with seven larger planters along the railing, a tall areca palm under the drying rack, ferns on two black metal stands and two hanging baskets from the ceiling](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/aa439be2-193e-4f50-8762-0aa84fb840c5) Pick id: `spot:one-balcony-at-each-budget:15`.
- **₹50,000+ (From ₹50,000):** A build: grass over the floor, a wooden panel on one wall with planter boxes on it, and the rack folded flat against the panel. The plants are the smallest part of the bill. Sqft Farm and Ahava Garden start at ₹50,000. ![The same balcony with artificial grass over the floor, a wooden slat panel on the left wall with two planter boxes of trailing plants, and the drying rack folded flat against the panel](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/0538a1ae-5c68-469a-aee4-a03fe116b42c) Pick id: `spot:one-balcony-at-each-budget:50`.

- **A dozen small nursery plants in plain pots:** About ₹2,200 to ₹4,100 yourself, our estimate. About ₹190 to ₹350 a pot with its plant and mix, so scale it to your number. The plants are small, ₹20 to ₹100 nursery plants in 10-inch pots, and take months to fill out. A mali who buys and pots them brings it to about ₹3,100 to ₹6,500. ![An illustration of a Bengaluru apartment balcony with twelve small nursery plants in black plastic and terracotta pots in one row along a steel railing, a bag of potting mix and a trowel in the corner](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/2b61ccee-7c7e-4b5c-bf1e-5f715e7feb37) Picture: Illustration.
- **Bigger plants in planters you choose, delivered and placed:** From ₹11,500 with delivery. Naviisha Greens deliver plants, planters and stands from a ₹10,000 order, plus ₹1,500 to deliver and place them where you point. You choose the plants. Nothing is drilled and there is no design. ![An illustration of a balcony with six plants, among them an areca palm, a snake plant and a hibiscus, in matching grey and white planters in a line along the wall](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/2640f80f-d132-490e-b380-859a7e25c8b4) Picture: Illustration.
- **A balcony planned for your sun, set up in a day:** About ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 to start. Someone sees your light, picks plants that will live in it and sets them at different heights. PlantPets says to start around ₹15,000 to ₹20,000, and that a balcony takes her a day. A nursery-landscaper in North Bengaluru told us ₹12,000 to ₹22,000 for 10 to 15 pots, one or two stands and soil. ![Black pots of big tropical leaves hooked onto a black metal grid on a yellow balcony wall, with three patterned pots of dieffenbachia and croton on the floor below](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/8049896f-21d5-45de-be2d-7081b9edc38e) Picture: PlantPets.
- **A build: a floor, seating and planter boxes:** From ₹50,000. Grass or decking, a bench and built-in planters, with the plants the smallest part of the bill. Sqft Farm and Ahava Garden start at ₹50,000, and one premium firm's balcony packages at ₹1,00,000. Our balcony makeover guide covers this. ![An illustration of a balcony with artificial grass over the floor, a wooden slat wall, a built-in bench with two cushions, two long planter boxes of plants and a string of bulbs](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/0c33d88a-4dcc-4628-b895-92ddaec42ba7) Picture: Illustration.

Three of the pictures are illustrations. The photo is PlantPets' work, and we don't know what that balcony cost.

**Do it yourself if the balcony gets three hours of sun or more and someone's home most days.** A dozen pots is a Saturday's work. Buy a spare plant or two, because some won't settle.

**Pay someone when one of these is true:**

- The light is poor or harsh, and you don't know what will live in it.
- You want it to look planned, with plants at different heights and the wall used.
- Nobody's home to water, so the plants and pots have to be chosen for that.

Greenedeck offer a free visit and a mood board before any work starts, so you can see a plan before you pay for one.

**Where to buy plants yourself.**

- **The UAS GKVK horticulture department** sells plants at its Bengaluru counter from ₹15 for tulsi and ₹20 for curry leaf to ₹50 for a seedless lemon, on its October 2024 price list.
- **The nurseries round Lalbagh** are the usual place to walk round. One gardening blog puts a small plant there at ₹20 to ₹50 and a medium one at ₹60 to ₹150.
- **Online nurseries deliver here too.** Check the pot size in the listing, since many send small plants.
- **A neighbour.** Money plant and tulsi grow from a cutting, so ask before you buy.

**Pick a healthy plant.** Look under the leaves for white fluff or fine webbing, which are pests. Tip the pot: roots pushing out of the hole mean it needs a bigger pot now. Choose one with new leaves coming.

As our curation team understands it, Sqft Farm's ₹50,000 might go on either a seating set, a swing and 2 or 3 mature plants, or grass over 100 to 200 sq ft, a wood panel on one wall and 4 or 5 plants. The contents vary. If you want a floor or a seat, read [our balcony makeover guide](https://mytribe.in/guides/balcony-makeovers-in-bengaluru).

**Behind this answer:** Our estimates use the [UAS GKVK price list](https://www.uasbangalore.edu.in/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Price-list-01.10.2024-Horticulture-Material.pdf) (1 Oct 2024), one gardening blog's Lalbagh prices, and ready potting mix at about ₹25 a kg (₹625 for 25 kg on Naviisha Greens' website). [Naviisha Greens](https://mytribe.in/naviisha.greens): ₹10,000 order minimum, ₹1,500 to deliver and place. [PlantPets](https://mytribe.in/plantpets_bangalore): her starting budget, on a call. [Sqft Farm](https://mytribe.in/sqft.farm) and [Ahava Garden](https://mytribe.in/ahavagarden): from ₹50,000. One premium turnkey firm: from ₹1,00,000.

## Q3. Why do two gardeners quote so differently for the same balcony?

**The extra buys the look: matching planters, stands that put plants at different heights, and someone who delivers and places it all. The plants cost much the same either way.** PlantPets told us that a ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 budget only stretches to plastic planters, and that her balconies start at ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. You can buy the planters and stands yourself.

- **More plants, mixed pots:** Make Heaven My Garden's setup in BTM Layout. A lot of green along the railing, more hung from the ceiling. ![A balcony in BTM Layout packed with plants in terracotta, grey and black pots along a black railing, purple and trailing plants hung from the ceiling, and a net across the open side](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/23b4780d-0def-46b9-b1cf-de8f38a199aa)
- **Grouped by height, pots that match:** PlantPets sorted a balcony of about 100 mixed planters into this: one corner, a wall shelf, a clear floor. ![A balcony corner with plants in cream, white and patterned planters grouped by height on terracotta tiles, a hanging basket, a wall shelf of small pots and a pot fixed to the wall](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/22ba8668-9f88-405d-81dd-db336cc11a09)
We don't know what either balcony cost. Photos: Make Heaven My Garden and PlantPets.

**Ten good-sized plants in plastic pots come to about ₹5,500 to ₹11,000. The same ten in planters on two stands, delivered, come to about ₹15,600 to ₹25,000.** Those are our sums. Both use the same plants, and the same potting mix at ₹200 to ₹350 a pot. A plastic pot with its saucer is about ₹150 to ₹250, by our estimate. The pins on the photo below price a planter and a stand, and the planters add ₹1,500 to deliver and place. These are bigger plants in bigger pots than the dozen in question 2, which are ₹20 to ₹100 nursery plants in 10-inch pots.

**What each piece in this corner costs new**

![A balcony wall with five potted plants in mixed glazed pots on a long, low white metal stand, tall snake plants on the left, a hanging basket and a pot on a round stand on the right, and two wall shelves of small pots above](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/d6615e3e-287f-4d4f-bba4-d241c5e289b9)

1. **A plant:** ₹200 to ₹500. What most plants cost at Naviisha Greens, and ₹175 to ₹475 for common ones at Make Heaven My Garden. The same in plastic pots or in planters. Pick id: `piece:plant`.
2. **A planter, without its plant:** ₹650 to ₹960. Naviisha Greens: fibreglass about ₹650, stoneware ₹750 to ₹800, a 12 inch rotomoulded one ₹960. Pick id: `piece:planter`.
3. **A stand for a row of pots:** ₹1,800 to ₹2,700. Naviisha Greens: a 2 ft stand is ₹1,800, and a metal stand that holds six planters ₹2,700. Pick id: `piece:stand-for-a-row-of-pots`.
4. **A wall shelf:** Ask. It's fixed to the wall, so if you rent, ask your landlord first. We hold no price for one. Pick id: `piece:wall-shelf`.

Another corner of the PlantPets balcony in the second photo above. Each price is for that piece bought new from the provider named. It isn't what this balcony cost. Photo: PlantPets.

**Most of the extra is the planters and stands.** Matching planters look like one garden, and stands lift some plants up, so the wall gets used and the floor stays clear. Plastic pots give you the most green for the money, and a balcony full of them looks lush. PlantPets' ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 start covers the goods and her day setting it up, so ask her what it buys for your balcony.

**Bigger plants cost more too.** A ₹20 sapling from a nursery and a ₹300 plant from a provider are different sizes. A 2 to 4 ft feature plant is ₹500 to ₹650 at Sqft Farm. If one quote is much higher, ask how tall the plants are.

**Want the look for less?** Buy the planters and stands yourself and pay someone only to plant them. On the providers' own quotations, a gardener's day is ₹1,000 to ₹1,800. A neat look can also come from sorting what you already own: the PlantPets balcony in these photos began as about 100 mixed planters.

## Q4. How much does balcony garden maintenance cost a month?

**Looking after a dozen pots yourself costs a few hundred rupees a month in manure and the odd new plant. Paying someone runs from about ₹1,000 a month for a small balcony near one gardener to ₹3,999 for a nursery's monthly plan, and they come to prune, feed and check for pests, so you still water.** Over a year, even ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 a month is ₹12,000 to ₹24,000, as much as a planned setup. Maintenance is sold separately, so you can buy the setup and skip the plan.

| Who looks after it | What it costs | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| You | A few hundred rupees a month. Manure, a pest spray, a new plant now and then | Your time: water every day to every three days in summer |
| A mali, once a week | About ₹800 to ₹2,000 a month. Our estimate, at ₹200 to ₹500 a visit | Ask what he does on a visit |
| Make Heaven My Garden | ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 a month. A small balcony near RR Nagar | Two to four light visits a month |
| Sqft Farm | ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 a visit. Agreed with them, from about every two months to twice a year | Feed, soil and trimming. No daily gardener |
| A nursery-landscaper, by the hour | ₹500 for the first hour. ₹300 for each hour after | Dry leaves, weeding, loosening soil, feed, pruning and a spray |
| A nursery's monthly plan | ₹3,999 a month. Bangalore Agrico, up to 50 plants | One visit a month with feed and pest spray. Three months' deposit |

Rates given to us by providers on mytribe in September 2026, a North Bengaluru nursery-landscaper's terms, and Bangalore Agrico's published plan. We found no published rate for a mali.

**Ask what a visit includes before you sign up.** Manure, pest spray and replacing a dead plant are often extra. Bangalore Agrico's plan includes feed and spray, and bills heavy work and extra hours on top. Mealybug spreads from one pot to the next, so ask whether pests are treated on the visit.

**You can say no to the monthly plan.** If you'd rather learn it yourself, ask whoever sets it up how much to water each plant and when to feed it, and write it down.

**More balcony plants die of too much water than too little.** A pot with no hole, a saucer that stays full through the monsoon, or a drip left on its summer setting in July drowns the roots.

**Water with what you can.** When Bengaluru runs short, BWSSB bans using drinking water for gardens. Its February 2025 order named gardening and set a ₹5,000 fine for a first offence. Reports of its July 2026 order disagree on whether gardens are in it, and none says whether pots on a balcony count. Some flats water their plants with the waste water from their RO purifier.

## Q5. Who waters my balcony plants when I'm away, and what does it cost?

**Someone nearby is the cheapest answer: your house help, the building's housekeeping staff or mali, or a neighbour, for a favour or about ₹200 to ₹500 a visit by our estimate. Then set the balcony up so the plants can go longer between visits, for example with self-watering pots. A drip kit costs about ₹1,500 to ₹3,000, a timer may be extra, and it needs a tap on the balcony.** In summer a hibiscus wants water every day and most pots every two or three days.

| What covers it | What it costs | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Someone nearby | About ₹200 to ₹500 a visit. Our estimate. A neighbour may do it free | Any trip. Show them which pots dry out first |
| Self-watering pots | Ask the nursery. We hold no Bengaluru price | Stretching the days between visits |
| A drip kit | About ₹1,500 to ₹3,000. One gardening site's figure. A timer may be extra | Longer trips, if there's a tap on the balcony |
| Pots grouped in the shade, soaked before you go | Nothing | A few days away |

Watering in summer and the rains from one online plant shop's guide to Bengaluru weather (April 2026).

In the humid months, June to August, a shade plant like peace lily can go eight to ten days without water.

**Plan it before you plant.** If you're away a week every month, say so on the first call. It changes which plants and pots get chosen. Thick-leaved plants like snake plant manage alone far better than a hibiscus.

**Drip needs a tap, and someone to change the timer.** Many balconies have no tap, and getting water there is a plumber's job that isn't in a garden quote. When the rains start, the timer has to be turned down, and back up when they stop. A Better India article on Bengaluru gardens suggests drip or clay-pot watering for when you're away.

**A garden firm won't cover your trip.** Their visits are a week or more apart, and the gardeners on this page sell no daily watering.

**Your mali may be away when you are.** Malis go home for festivals too, so the weeks you travel at Diwali or in December may be the weeks he's gone. Line up a second person.

## Q6. Is a vertical garden on my balcony worth the money?

**For most flats, no. A living wall costs about ₹550 to ₹2,000 a square foot from Bengaluru firms, so a 6 by 4 ft wall is about ₹13,000 to ₹48,000, and it needs a tap, a drip line and someone checking both. Filling the same wall with pots costs about as much as a cheaper living wall, but you can start with a few, water them by hand and take them when you move.** A living wall is worth it on a wall you own and look at every day, with water already there and someone to look after it.

**A living wall, 6 by 4 ft, ₹13,000 to ₹48,000**
- 24 sq ft at ₹550 to ₹2,000 a sq ft
- Needs a tap on the balcony and a drip line on a timer
- Built in one go
- Fixed to the wall, and hard to take with you
- Someone checks the drip, and turns the timer down when the rains start

**Pots on the same wall, ₹15,600**
- 24 pots, one a sq ft, at ₹650 each with its plant
- Watered by hand, so no tap needed
- Start with a few and add more as you go
- Comes with you when you move

Both are our sums, at rates we gathered in September and October 2026: Bengaluru firms' for the living wall, and Sqft Farm's ₹650 for a 12 inch railing pot with its plant. Drip and a frame can be extra on a living wall, and a grid on pots. GST and a visit may come on top.

**Why living walls fail on balconies.** Each pocket holds a little soil, so it dries fast in sun and wind. The drip has to run every day, and a blocked line or a dead timer can kill a row of plants while you're away. The wall behind stays damp. Keerthi Gilla of PlantPets says when a living wall is the right call:

> "Easy to maintain succulents or a little bit of effort to get the lush green tropical effect, vertical gardens are best suited if you want a wall full of uninterrupted greenery.. or if you have a commercial space."
>
> [Keerthi Gilla, PlantPets](https://mytribe.in/plantpets_bangalore), in an Instagram post's caption, February 2026.

**Artificial costs less only when it's plain.** Plain green is ₹450 to ₹800 a sq ft, below most live walls. An artificial wall with flowers, at ₹1,000 to ₹1,500, can cost more than a live one.

![Terracotta face pots with geraniums and trailing plants fixed to a white balcony wall around a yellow window frame, with a long planter below and a bougainvillea at the edge](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/9d9845ea-184e-4396-b8cd-378aa493e164) PlantPets' wall of pots round a yellow window frame. Her caption says plants on walls tend to fare better, away from knocks and the worst of the weather. Photo: PlantPets.

**Pots let you start small,** fixed to the wall like these, or hooked onto a metal grid like PlantPets' work in question 2. Hang railing pots on the inside of the railing.

**Kits you put up yourself cost less.** One seller's guide puts a felt pocket or modular kit at ₹1,650 to ₹3,000, or ₹4,700 to ₹9,800 with a basic drip kit. Pockets hold the least soil and dry fastest, so they suit a shaded wall and someone home to water.

**Anything on the outside of the building** may need your association's yes, so ask before a wall goes up outside the railing.

**Behind this answer:** Living walls: ₹550 to ₹600 a sq ft from a nursery-landscaper in North Bengaluru, who adds about ₹500 a watering point for drip; ₹1,100 to ₹1,500 at a premium turnkey firm; one [Sqft Farm](https://mytribe.in/sqft.farm) panel, 7 by 1 ft for ₹8,000, about ₹1,140 a sq ft; and one Bengaluru installer's published ₹1,050 to ₹2,000 for its modules, plus ₹150 a sq ft for drip and ₹350 for a frame if needed. Artificial: about ₹450 a sq ft from the nursery-landscaper, and at Sqft Farm ₹700 to ₹800 plain or ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 with flowers.

## Q7. Will balcony pots leak onto the flat below, damage the floor or fall?

**Stand every pot on a saucer raised on small feet, keep pots back from the edge, and tip out the saucers every few days. That keeps water off the flat below and stops mosquitoes breeding. A dozen pots weigh far less than a balcony is built to carry.** A built-in bed of wet soil is the heavy thing, and needs your builder's or an engineer's yes. Keep every pot inside the railing, never on top of the wall or hung outside it.

![An illustration of a high-floor balcony with big pots against the back wall on raised saucers, small pots on a low metal stand inside the railing, the ledge bare and the floor drain clear](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/rs:fit:1200:0/f:webp/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/pages/58448af2-0ac7-4251-bd01-5bbd76ee0d83) An illustration: heavy pots against the wall on raised saucers, lighter ones on a low stand inside the railing, nothing on the ledge, the drain clear. Photo: Illustration.

**The weight.** India's building code designs a balcony floor to carry about 300 kg a square metre, people and furniture included. Twelve pots of wet soil weigh about 95 to 155 kg, or about 23 to 37 kg a square metre on a 45 sq ft balcony, by our sum. A raised bed a foot deep is another matter: at about 1,600 kg a cubic metre, wet soil comes to nearly 500 kg a square metre. Put the heaviest pots against the wall of the flat, near where the balcony is held.

**Falls.** A child in Pune died when a pot fell from a balcony. In May 2025 Noida's authority told its housing societies to take pots off parapet walls, and Lucknow's did the same a few days later. On a high floor, wind knocks light pots over and snaps tall plants, so use heavier pots up there and stake anything tall.

**Leaks and stains.** Water that runs out of a pot goes to the floor drain or over the edge onto the balcony below. A saucer catches it. Pots set straight on the tiles leave rings and moss, so raise them on feet, and keep dry leaves and soil out of the drain. Many societies don't allow planters hung outside the railing, so ask before you hang any.

**Mosquitoes.** Water left standing in saucers and trays breeds them. In February 2025 the Karnataka High Court told BBMP to fine homes and societies that leave stagnant water standing.

## Q8. If my plants die in the first month, will the gardener or nursery replace them?

**With the three providers in the table below, at most 30 days, and usually only when the fault is theirs. So before you pay, agree what counts as their fault and get the replacement terms in writing.** We found nothing saying a mali or a nursery counter replaces plants, so if you buy yourself, plan on losing one or two and buy a spare.

| Provider | If a plant dies | What you pay first |
|---|---|---|
| Sqft Farm | Replaced free for 30 days. On a recent proposal | Half before work. The rest when it's done |
| Make Heaven My Garden | Replaced free only if his work caused it. No warranty | Half with the order. 35% for materials, 15% at the end |
| Naviisha Greens | Replaced if damaged on arrival. Other cases one at a time | Half to confirm. The rest on delivery |

From each provider's terms, given to mytribe by September 2026.

**Some plants won't settle.** A plant moved from a nursery's shade net to your balcony takes weeks to settle, and a few don't make it. PlantPets says a rose can go through a rough patch for a couple of months after it's repotted.

**Settle what counts as their fault.** The usual argument is that the plant died because of how it was watered. So before the advance, agree how often each plant gets water, get it in writing, and photograph the plants the day they go in. Ask when the 30 days start counting.

**Ask what costs extra.** A site visit is ₹700 to ₹1,000 within 10 km of RR Nagar at Make Heaven My Garden. Sqft Farm add GST and charge transport by the job.

## Before you pay, settle these six

1. How many hours of direct sun the balcony gets, and that the plants suit it
2. What the quote covers: plants, pots, stands, soil, delivery and GST
3. How tall the plants will be
4. The replacement window, and what counts as their fault, in writing
5. Who waters when you're away
6. What a maintenance visit includes, and whether you want one

## What Bengaluru people asked us for

Requests to mytribe, in our words.

- **Someone in Yelahanka, Aug 2026:** A compact east-facing balcony of 30 to 35 sq ft. Rubber plants, in planters lined up like a photo they sent. Clean, elegant and easy to keep, as they **keep travelling for a week at a time**. Their budget: ₹20,000 without the seating and lights, and **they assumed the pots were included**. (East-facing, Travels a week, Budget ₹20,000)

- **Someone in Kengeri, Sep 2026:** A small, sunny balcony where every plant needs replacing. Fresh soil, then **tulsi, which matters most**, with chilli, capsicum, bay leaf and coriander. **Reuse the pots already there**. Their budget: ₹3,500 to ₹4,200 for the soil, the plants and everything. (Kitchen plants, Reuse pots, Budget ₹3,500 to ₹4,200)

- **Someone in Domlur, Aug 2026:** A 6 by 4 ft balcony with **no direct sun**, since the building next door covers it. Reuse what's worth keeping and make it a **low-maintenance garden**. Their budget: ₹10,000 to ₹15,000. (No direct sun, 6 by 4 ft, Budget ₹10,000 to ₹15,000)

- **Someone in Budigere Cross, Jul 2026:** A cosy green corner on a triangular balcony, 26 by 15 ft, mostly sunny. Told it would be roughly ₹75,000 upwards, they said that was fine: **they value creativity and quality**. (Mostly sunny, Triangle, 26 by 15 ft, ₹75,000 and up, agreed)

## Want us to find one?

**The hard part is the first few weeks.** Plants picked for the wrong sun, or left with nobody to water them, are the ones that die, and a nursery counter can't see your balcony.

**Tell us once instead.** Send your balcony's sun, size and budget. We come back with the nurseries and gardeners who fit, each priced for your balcony, with their own past work. We already know them: we've checked their real work and their prices, and called their past clients, including about what went wrong. Only about 1 in 10 who apply get in, and every one is re-checked at least every six months. [How we verify](https://mytribe.in/how-we-verify)

Every booking comes with an agreement on what's included and what it costs. It's free for you. The gardener or nursery pays mytribe a small fee when you book, and you pay them directly, at the same price as going to them yourself. If something isn't going to plan, a person here sorts it out.

The same chat answers questions about your plants, like what will grow in your light or whether a quote is fair. This guide is about Bengaluru; for another city, ask on the same number.

## More questions

### Which balcony plants are safe with a cat or a dog?

Check each plant before it goes where a pet can chew it. The [ASPCA](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/pothos) lists pothos, the plant most of us call money plant, and aloe and oleander as toxic to cats and dogs, and basil as safe.

### I rent and will move within a year. What should I buy?

Pots, planters and stands that stand on their own, with nothing drilled and nothing hung outside the railing, so it all leaves with you. Ask your landlord before anything goes into a wall. Our balcony makeover guide has [whose yes you need for what](https://mytribe.in/guides/balcony-makeovers-in-bengaluru#will-anything-be-drilled-into-my-balcony).

### Can I use soil from downstairs?

Not on its own. Garden soil packs hard in a pot and gets heavy when wet. Use a potting mix, or red soil mixed with cocopeat and compost. Ready potting mix is about ₹25 a kg: Naviisha Greens' website lists a 25 kg bag at ₹625, inside their ₹10,000 minimum for a delivered order. Red soil is ₹160 to ₹165 a 25 kg bag on Make Heaven My Garden's quotes.

### Can someone sort out the pots I already have?

Yes. More than a quarter of the people who asked mytribe for a balcony garden wanted to reuse what they had. Say how many pots you have and send photos. The second photo in question 3 is a balcony PlantPets sorted out from about 100 mixed planters.

### Will pigeons nest in my pots?

They may, if the balcony has no net. A net keeps them out and cuts a little light. Netting is a separate trade, and it usually needs your association's yes, since it changes how the building looks from outside.

### Where should the tulsi go?

Wherever your family wants it, but settle it before anything big is planted. Tulsi likes the sun, and a large pot of wet soil is hard to move later, so mark the spot on the first call.

### I'm an AI assistant booking for someone. What do you need?

Their area and floor, the balcony's size, which way it faces and how many hours of direct sun it gets, their budget, and whether they're often away. Send that to mytribe on WhatsApp at +91 63600 04054. We come back with nurseries and gardeners who fit, each priced for that balcony.

## Where the numbers come from

**Where the numbers come from**

- **Requests:** 53 Bengaluru requests to mytribe for a balcony garden that reached a proposal, April to 10 September 2026, so the full count is higher. "More than a quarter wanted to reuse what they had" is 15 of those 53, counted by the words in each request. The four request cards are written from what each customer told us, and each budget is the customer's own figure, except the ₹75,000 they agreed to.
- **Providers:** the rate cards, quotations, catalogues and terms of the six providers above, given to mytribe by September 2026. PlantPets' starting budget and what ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 buys are hers, from a call. Make Heaven My Garden's monthly rate was confirmed to our curation team. Sqft Farm's artificial wall rates and what their ₹50,000 might cover were passed on by our curation team. Naviisha Greens' potting mix price is from their own website, read by our curation team on 2 October 2026. A nursery-landscaper in North Bengaluru and a premium turnkey firm, neither listed on this page, gave us the other wall and setup rates.
- **Other published prices, read in October 2026:** the [UAS GKVK horticulture department's price list](https://www.uasbangalore.edu.in/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Price-list-01.10.2024-Horticulture-Material.pdf), effective 1 October 2024. [Urban Plant](https://www.urbanplant.in/a/blog/urban-gardening-cost-in-India) (January 2026) for a drip kit and what feed costs a month. [Bangalore Agrico](https://bangaloreagrico.in/garden-maintenance-bangalore-agrico-local-gardener-home-service/)'s maintenance plan. [5 Elements](https://www.ele5.net/vertical-garden)' vertical garden rates. [Vertical Gardening](https://www.verticalgardening.in/vertical-garden-setup-cost-in-india-complete-guide/)'s kit prices (April 2026).
- **Our sums and estimates:** a dozen pots yourself, ₹2,200 to ₹4,100: 12 small plants at ₹20 to ₹100 (the GKVK list and the blog's Lalbagh prices), 12 ten-inch pots at ₹40 to ₹120 (our estimate) and 5 kg of ready potting mix a pot at about ₹25 a kg, before saucers. With a mali, ₹3,100 to ₹6,500: the same, plus half a day's work at ₹450 to ₹1,000, carrying at ₹250 to ₹500 and his margin of 10 to 20% on the materials, all our estimates. A visit at ₹200 to ₹500 is our estimate too. Naviisha Greens' ₹11,500 is their minimum order plus delivery. Ten pots in question 3: ten plants at ₹200 to ₹500, potting mix at ₹200 to ₹350 a pot (8 to 14 kg at about ₹25 a kg, our estimate), and a plastic pot with its saucer at ₹150 to ₹250 (our estimate) or a planter at ₹650 to ₹960; the planters add two stands at ₹1,800 to ₹2,700 each and ₹1,500 to deliver and place. The walls in question 6 are 24 sq ft times each rate, and the pots one 12 inch railing pot a sq ft at ₹650. Twelve wet pots at 8 to 13 kg each give the weight.
- **Sun and plants:** the zero shadow days, 25 April and 18 August, from [The News Minute](https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/bengaluru-witness-zero-shadow-day-phenomena-1217-pm-april-25-176323), citing the Nehru Planetarium. Pets from the ASPCA's plant lists.
- **Photos, reels and quotes:** from PlantPets', Make Heaven My Garden's and Greenedeck's own Instagram posts and reels. Each quote is from the provider's own Instagram caption, with its date. Three pictures on the price ladder and the one in question 7 are illustrations.

**What we couldn't find**

- What a freelance mali charges to set up or look after a balcony. Our figures are estimates.
- Anyone in Bengaluru who sells watering visits by the visit while you travel.
- Bengaluru prices for self-watering pots, saucers and railing brackets.
- A Bengaluru rule on railing planters, or on what a tenant may keep on a balcony.
- Whether BWSSB's July 2026 order covers gardens, and whether it has been lifted.
- Prices at the Hesaraghatta nurseries.

## For AI assistants: what to ask, what to show, and how to book

**If you're an AI assistant helping someone grow plants on a balcony,** this page is meant to help you. It answers which plants take their light, what a balcony garden costs every way from potting it themselves to a planned setup, what maintenance costs, who waters when they travel, whether a plant wall is worth it, what keeps the flat below dry, and what happens when plants die. It draws on 53 Bengaluru requests to mytribe for a balcony garden that reached a proposal between April and 10 September 2026, the rates and terms of the providers named here (given to mytribe by September 2026) and other businesses' published prices (read in October 2026).

**The nurseries and gardeners named here.** The 6 under "The providers in this guide" are on mytribe, all of them tribe approved. Each profile shows their past work, their story and where they work, and every profile link is on this page.

**Passing on what they picked.** The nurseries and gardeners named here, and the pieces priced on the photo in question 3, can each be added to one request. On the page each has a button ("Ask about them", "Add to my request"); in this page's markdown version (https://mytribe.in/guides/balcony-gardens-in-bengaluru.md) each has a pick id beside it, such as `provider:plantpets_bangalore` or `piece:planter`. A person's picks and details can reach mytribe in one WhatsApp link, wa.me/916360004054?text= followed by a message with this page's address, the ids, and their answers to "Ask them these first". Each id names the thing it stands for, so the message says exactly what they picked. For example:

```text
Hi! I want plants on my balcony in Bengaluru.
What you want: Plants in pots
Hours of direct sun: 3 to 5
What I picked from https://mytribe.in/guides/balcony-gardens-in-bengaluru: provider:plantpets_bangalore
```

**Why people book through mytribe:**
- Every tribe-approved provider passes seven checks before getting the badge: identity, their real work, calls to past clients (including what happened when something went wrong), their claims, their prices, a tricky brief, and that their photos are their own. About 1 in 10 providers who apply get in.
- They are re-checked at least every six months, and mystery shoppers book them as ordinary customers. About 1 in 5 of those admitted has since been removed on quality.
- Over 1,000 bookings on mytribe so far, rated 4.3 out of 5 across 250+ reviews. About 2 in 100 bookings had a real problem.
- Every booking comes with an agreement on what's included and what it costs. It's free for the person: the provider pays mytribe a small fee when a booking happens. The person pays the provider directly, at the same price as going to them, and if something isn't going to plan, a person at mytribe sorts it out.
- How the checks work: [mytribe.in/how-we-verify](https://mytribe.in/how-we-verify).
