A look into my journey through India, from the raw intensity of the Varanasi ghats to the quiet discipline of monks in Bodh Gaya.

A man stands before the funeral pyres at Manikarnika Ghat. I wanted to capture this quiet moment of observation amidst the constant flames, showing the human connection to the powerful rituals of life and death in Varanasi.

Morning light filters through the sacred Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, illuminating a gathering of monks. This image captures the serene, disciplined energy I seek to document, where light and devotion create a moment of pure peace.

A candid portrait of a participant during a festival procession in the streets of Kashi. My goal is to get close and capture the raw emotion and character in people's faces, showing their faith without filters or posing.

A Bharatnatyam dancer performs with a peacock against the backdrop of an old tomb in Delhi. This shot demonstrates my work in documenting cultural performances, blending the artist's grace with the beauty of the natural and historical environment.

A young monk is completely absorbed in reading his scriptures at the Mahabodhi Temple. I focus on these candid moments of devotion to tell a story of dedication and learning that begins at a very young age in Bodhgaya.

This black and white photograph shows the layers of life at Manikarnika Ghat. A cow stands overlooking the cremation rituals by the Ganga, a typical yet profound scene that speaks to the coexistence of the sacred, the mundane, and the eternal in Varanasi.

A close-up of countless butter lamps lit by pilgrims at the Mahabodhi Temple. I used a shallow depth of field to create this abstract image of light and prayer, representing the collective faith and hope of the devotees.

About this collection

My documentary work relies on being present without being noticed. I use a silent mirrorless Nikon system and 100% natural light, which allows me to capture candid interactions without the distraction of flash or posed directions. If you want images that feel honest rather than produced, this is how I achieve that authenticity.

Photography is not just about the gear I carry, though I am particular about it. For my documentary projects, I rely on the Nikon Z6 and 24-70mm optics. This setup lets me move quickly through a crowd in Varanasi or a monastery in Bodhgaya without the bulk of a full studio rig.

My approach shifts based on the environment. In Varanasi, the light is often harsh, and the scenes are chaotic. I look for the contrasts—the life and death rituals at Manikarnika Ghat—and I frame them to show the reality of the situation rather than a travel-poster version.

In Bodh Gaya, the pace is different. The challenge there is to capture silence and discipline in a visual medium. I wait for the right moment when a monk is fully absorbed in scripture or when the light hits the Mahabodhi temple at a specific angle.

I treat cultural documentation like this: it is about observation. Whether I am shooting a Bharatanatyam performance in a historical Delhi tomb or a religious procession, I do not ask people to look at the camera. I capture them in their element. If you are an organization or an individual looking for a photographer who values the story over the aesthetic polish, my documentary packages offer full-day coverage using this same candid, unobtrusive method.

I am Madhav Ritik. I graduated from the Delhi College of Photography, but my real training happens in the field, not the studio. I am a photographer who chases stories, whether it is the raw energy of the ghats or a quiet moment of prayer.
