Kashi: Between Life and Liberation
In Varanasi, I chase the soul of the city, from the quiet sunrise on the Ganga to the profound chaos of the ghats. This collection explores the ancient cycle of life, death, and faith that defines Kashi.
A cinematic reel capturing the finality and continuity at Manikarnika Ghat, the main burning ghat of Varanasi. The visuals reflect on the concept of 'Maya' or illusion, showing that nothing in this world is permanent.
An overhead view of Manikarnika Ghat, showing the constant activity of funeral pyres and grieving families. The image, titled 'The burning ghat of Varanasi', serves as an introduction to this profound place.
This series of images with text overlays explains the beliefs surrounding Manikarnika Ghat. They detail the path to liberation (moksha), the eternal flames, and Lord Shiva's role in guiding souls.

About this collection
Photographing the ghats requires more than just a camera; it demands patience, a low profile, and respect for the environment. I shoot these moments primarily with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, focusing on natural light to capture the raw atmosphere of Manikarnika without intrusive flash equipment. If you are looking for this level of authentic, candid documentary coverage for your own story or project, let's discuss how we can approach it.
The Soul of Kashi
There is a specific rhythm to Varanasi that you cannot force. Whether it is the Masaan Holi where the air is thick with ash, or the quiet, steady burning of pyres at Manikarnika Ghat, the city demands that you become a part of the background. My approach to Kashi is purely observational. I do not look for staged portraits or perfect smiles. I look for the truth in the eyes of the Aghori sadhus, the movement of the boatmen, and the fleeting light that hits the ancient stone steps.
My Documentary Approach
I treat my work as a form of visual storytelling. For this series, I used the Sony A7C II, which allows me to be agile in crowded spaces without drawing attention. The 50mm prime lens is my tool of choice because it forces me to get close to the action, creating that intimate, subject-isolated feel. The moody, vintage-inspired color grading you see in these frames is designed to strip away the distraction of the modern world and highlight the timeless nature of the rituals taking place.
Why Choose This Style?
If you are looking for more than just a souvenir photo, this is the approach you need. Whether you want to document a personal journey, a cultural festival, or a documentary-style project, I prioritize atmosphere over artificial lighting. I am available to travel for projects that require this same level of immersion, ensuring your final images or films feel like a real slice of life rather than a polished advertisement.
