Behind the Scenes: How We Build Iconic Spaces
Design is more than just sketches. It is the grit, the systems, and the chaotic joy of making a space real. Step into the engine room of Essajees Atelier.
The secret to managing projects in multiple cities is systems. Before we start any site, we bind all drawings, mark up the walls and floors with dimensions, and get all material samples approved to ensure everyone is perfectly aligned.
A simple but game-changing practice we follow on all our sites is keeping a printed project timeline visible for everyone to see. It keeps the entire team accountable and helps us track if we are running on schedule.
The final minutes before a client handover are a mix of controlled chaos and excitement. It takes a village to get a home ready for the big reveal, and seeing our clients' happy faces makes all the stress worth it.

A glimpse of the finished red tunnel at Koko Hyderabad, reflecting the stunning origami light installation. The end result exceeded all our expectations.
Seeing a space we designed from scratch, like the bar at Dave & Buster's, buzzing with people and energy is an incredible high. It’s a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
About this collection
We do not leave execution to chance. Before a single wall is painted, we spiral-bind every drawing into a master book and tape floor plans onto the actual site surfaces. This is not just about organization, it is how we ensure that what we designed in our studio is exactly what gets built, whether it is a high-energy bar or a private residence.
A design is only as good as the site supervision behind it. When you see a finished space, you are looking at the result of hundreds of small, deliberate decisions made long before the final lights were turned on.
The Reality of Execution
We treat every site like an operation. Whether we are transforming a restaurant like Koko or managing a boutique cafe, we rely on rigid project management. We keep printed schedules clearly visible on-site, allowing us to track status in real-time. If a task is not checked off on the date it was due, the whole team knows immediately. This is how we maintain speed without sacrificing quality.
Solving Complex Challenges
Much of our work happens when we encounter a constraint. An industrial AC duct or a lack of wall space is not a problem; it is a design opportunity. We turn these functional requirements into features, using custom ceiling engineering or 'no-walls' zoning logic to maximize area without compromising the aesthetic.
From Render to Reality
We rely on high-fidelity 3D renders to set expectations early. By the time we reach the final minutes of a handover, the room should already feel familiar. That chaotic energy of a site approaching completion is the most rewarding part of the job. It is when the material samples, the lighting plans, and the structural planning finally click into place to reveal the home or commercial space we promised.
Sarah Sham
I'm Sarah Sham, and I lead the team here at Essajees Atelier. I believe that a beautiful space is empty without a plan, so I spend just as much time worrying about timelines and floor dimensions as I do about aesthetics.
