Vitiligo in Children: Expert Diagnosis and Care
Not every white patch on a child is Vitiligo. It could be a simple allergy or fungal infection, but you need a correct diagnosis to stop it from spreading.
It's very important to know that not all white patches on a child's skin are Vitiligo. I explain the different causes, from simple allergies to actual Vitiligo, and why getting a quick, expert diagnosis is the most important first step.
This is a short video of a young patient undergoing excimer laser therapy at my clinic. The procedure is safe, non-invasive, and a key part of my treatment for bringing colour back to the white patches, even for children.
About Vitiligo in Children
When you see white patches on your child, the most critical step is ruling out other conditions like Pityriasis Alba or fungal infections before assuming it is Vitiligo. Treating the wrong condition can worsen the skin, which is why I prioritize a Wood’s lamp diagnosis in my clinic to confirm exactly what we are dealing with before starting any treatment.
Parents often worry that any white spot is Vitiligo, but my 21 years of practice show that this is not always the case. Children frequently develop Pityriasis Alba, a common allergy that clears up with simple care, or even fungal infections like Tinea Versicolor which mimic the appearance of white patches.
Diagnosis is the First Step
Before starting any medicine, I perform a Wood’s lamp examination. This simple, painless procedure under UV light helps me differentiate between these common conditions and actual Vitiligo. If it is Pityriasis Alba or a fungal issue, we treat it with mild creams or anti-fungals, and the skin usually recovers quickly without heavy medication.
If It Is Vitiligo
If the diagnosis confirms Vitiligo, the goal is simple: halt the progression immediately. I never use aggressive treatments on children. We start with safe, oral, or topical immunomodulators to stabilize the immune system. Once we stop new patches from appearing, we use targeted, kid-friendly light therapies like NBUVB or Excimer laser. These lasers stimulate pigment production without the need for invasive procedures.
Why Avoid Home Remedies
Please, do not apply steroid creams bought over the counter. These can permanently thin a child's delicate skin and often make the problem worse in the long run. There is no need for home remedies or internet trends when modern medical science can safely manage the condition. Reach out, send a photo, and let's determine the right path for your child.
