Improving Balance and Preventing Falls in Seniors
Regaining stability is about more than just avoiding falls; it is about reclaiming your independence and confidence in every daily movement.
This 80-year-old patient is proof that determination pays off. We are working on balance training using a foam pad to challenge and improve her stability, a core part of geriatric physiotherapy.
Balance training is a cornerstone of geriatric care. This video shows different techniques I use, from walking exercises to seated ball throws, to help my senior patients improve their stability and coordination.
Strengthening the leg muscles is vital for preventing falls in elders. Here, I am assisting a patient with a resistance band exercise to build knee and thigh strength right in the comfort of her home.
About Improving Balance & Preventing Falls
Falls in older adults often stem from a loss of core stability and simple muscle weakness that gets overlooked. In my clinic, I incorporate specific proprioception drills like standing on foam pads or using therapy balls to retrain your brain and body connection, which is essential for regaining confidence in every step you take.
Why Balance Matters
As we age, our bodies change, and activities that used to be second nature—like walking to the kitchen or standing up from a chair—can start to feel risky. If you are experiencing dizziness, unsteadiness, or a lingering fear of falling, it is time to address the root cause, not just the symptoms. My goal is to move you from feeling fragile to feeling steady.
My Approach to Stability
I treat balance as a combination of strength, reaction time, and confidence. When you work with me, we don't just focus on standard leg exercises. We create a plan that might include:
- Proprioception Training: Using foam pads and wobble boards to teach your muscles how to react quickly to uneven surfaces.
- Gait Analysis: I will watch how you walk to identify any imbalances or compensatory patterns that increase your risk of falling.
- Functional Strength: We focus on the muscles you actually use daily, like glutes and quads, to ensure you have the power to stay upright.
- Home Safety: I often do home visits to look at your living space, helping you understand where you might need a simple adjustment to make your environment safer.
Evidence-Based Care
Everything I do is rooted in evidence-based practice. I want you to understand your own body, which is why I teach simple home exercises as soon as you are ready. This isn't about being dependent on me forever; it is about getting you to a place where you can manage your own health and keep thriving independently. Whether you prefer to visit my clinic in New Rajinder Nagar or need a home visit across Delhi NCR, we will take this step by step, together.
