Pigmentation has many root causes, from hormones to friction. Stop guessing with generic products and get a clear, scientific assessment to treat your skin right.

If you wear glasses, you might notice dark marks on your nose from the pressure and friction of the nose pads. I share tips to prevent this, including choosing a lightweight frame and using a retinol or skin-lightening cream at night.

Hyperpigmentation and melasma are not the same. Hyperpigmentation is a general term for darkened skin, while melasma is a specific type caused by hormones and genetics. I explain the key differences in causes and treatment.

Dark elbows and knees are often caused by friction, but can also be linked to hormonal conditions like PCOS or diabetes. I recommend avoiding rubbing, moisturizing frequently with a urea-based cream, and using a combination of tretinoin and azelaic acid.

Dark patches on the forehead can be caused by more than just the sun. I discuss other common culprits, including friction from rubbing, irritation from pain balms, hair dye allergies, and even vitamin B12 deficiency.

Melasma is one of the most difficult types of pigmentation to treat because it has so many variable causes. While it can be lightened, I am always honest with my patients that it requires patience and consistent, long-term management.

A de-tan face wash alone will not remove a tan. Tanning involves deep melanin production, and a face wash has too little contact time to be effective. For real results, you need skin-lightening creams, chemical peels, or laser toning.

Don't waste your money on skin-lightening soaps. They are on your skin for too short a time to deliver active ingredients effectively. For true brightening, use depigmenting creams or serums and consider treatments like PICO laser toning.

About Tackling Pigmentation & Dark Spots

Pigmentation is rarely just about sun exposure. From friction marks caused by glasses to hormonal shifts like melasma, the root cause varies wildly. A standard brightening cream often does more harm than good if it is not matched to your specific inflammation levels or skin type. In my clinic, we start by identifying whether your dark spots stem from hormonal imbalances, lifestyle habits, or previous product reactions, so we can build a protocol that actually targets the source.
