Common Skincare Mistakes & Red Flags

The internet is full of viral skincare hacks that cause more harm than good. Before you try another DIY tip, let's look at the common red flags I see in my clinic every day.

As a dermatologist, there are a few things I would never recommend. This includes applying toothpaste on pimples, using unlabeled "whitening" creams, scrubbing your arms daily with a loofah, and popping your pimples.

This is a situation I see often: a patient stops one steroid cream like Betnovate only to start another like Skinlite. I cannot stress this enough: do not use these potent steroid creams on your face without a doctor's supervision, as they will cause permanent damage.

About Dermatologist's Red Flags: What to Avoid

I often see patients in my clinic who started with a simple 'whitening' cream bought off the shelf, only to develop skin thinning or permanent sensitivity because it contained hidden steroids. If you are currently using a product because an influencer recommended it, or because it worked 'instantly' for a friend, stop and check the label. Your skin barrier is delicate; let’s make sure you aren't damaging it permanently with products that are essentially prescription medication in disguise.
