Evidence-Based Strength Training: My Personal Journey
I am Dr. Nakul Kumar. This is a look at my own journey, from quitting my first job as an architect to earning a PhD in Strength and Conditioning, and the science-backed philosophy I use to build resilient bodies.
This is how it all started. From quitting my first job as an architect to getting a PhD in Strength & Conditioning and presenting at conferences. It's been a 9-year journey of learning and coaching.
A look back at my own physical transformation from 19 to 35. The biggest change? Learning how to use Photoshop. Joking aside, it's been a long road of consistent training and disciplined habits.
Another look at my journey. The two variables that have had the biggest impact are consistency and training intensity. That's what I preach because that's what works.
My physique transformation from 33 to 36. The aesthetic is a byproduct of the actual goal: getting healthier, fitter, and developing specific physical qualities.
A look at my health metrics from 2021 to now. My average resting heart rate has dropped, while my high has increased, showing improved cardiovascular fitness. This is the result of consistent, concurrent training.
My own injury story. In 2018, I sustained a back injury from a series of stupid decisions, not from a specific 'dangerous' exercise. It was a lesson in load management and ego.
This is part of my rehab and rebuilding process. I continued to stay active and train around the injury, focusing on calming the tissue down and then building it back up, stronger than before.
My back is now the strongest it's ever been, and I'm lifting heavier than I was pre-injury. The point is that you can come back from injuries, and the benefits of strength training far outweigh the risks if you are sensible.
About My Personal Journey & Training
You will not find filtered fitness fluff here. My progress from an architect to a strength coach, and how I rehabilitated a spinal injury, is not just a highlight reel. It is the practical application of the same science-backed training protocols I use with my clients, proving that consistency and sensible load management beat the 'perfect form' myths found throughout the fitness industry.
This is not about aesthetic perfection. My journey over the last nine years has been driven by the goal of understanding physiological adaptation. Whether it is improving my cardiovascular engine or rebuilding my back after a 2018 L4-L5 annular tear, my training is entirely evidence-based.
When I injured my back, I did not stop moving. I followed a simple, non-linear rehab process: calm the tissue down, then gradually build capacity. I avoided the circus acts and 'safer' alternatives, focusing instead on load management. That experience taught me more than any textbook could about what a body can actually handle when managed correctly.
My programs follow the same principles I apply to myself. We utilize concurrent training, blending heavy resistance for strength with conditioning for heart health. We do not chase fads. We chase consistency. Whether you are recovering from an injury or trying to break a plateau, the solution is not a 'secret' exercise. It is structured, intelligent programming. If you are ready to stop guessing and start training, let’s get to work.
