Matted Coat Safety Shave & Reset
Shave Process
- Visual Assessment: Evaluation of coat condition to determine the safest starting point for the shave.
- Safety Shave: Removal of the matted carapace using a #10 blade before the bath to prevent tightening knots.
- Sensitive Area Focus: Specialized handling for shaving thin skin areas like armpits and tuck-ups.
Hygiene & Care
- Soothing Bath: Application of mild, hypoallergenic, or anti-itch shampoo to relieve skin suffocated by fur.
- Sanitary Groom: Cleaning of ear canals, plucking hair if necessary, and clipping overgrown nails.
- Finish: High-velocity drying and an even-out trim for the face and tail (if salvageable).
Medical Tick Infestation Rescue
Medical Intervention
- Mandatory Shave-Down: Full removal of the coat to expose skin and parasites, applicable even for double-coated breeds.
- Manual Extraction: Hand-tweezing of engorged ticks from critical areas like ears, paws, and neck.
- Medicated Soak: Soaking bath using anti-tick formulation to eliminate remaining pests and larvae.
Safety Protocols
- Handler Safety: Use of basket muzzle during invasive procedures to ensure safe handling.
- Skin Check: detailed inspection for hot spots or tick-bite infections to identify areas needing vet attention.
- Facility Sterilization: Includes the cost of deep-cleaning the salon immediately after service to prevent contamination.

At Downtown Dogs, we put your dog's comfort and health before anything else. If your pup is in pain or struggling with a coat or skin problem, my main focus is to help them feel better, not just look good.
When Basic Grooming Won't Do
Some dogs have it rough – super matted fur or a bad tick and flea situation. Regular grooming just isn't enough for these cases. That's when I step in with special care.
What I Actually Do
- Matted Fur Relief: Severe matting can hurt like hell for dogs. I do a careful shave-down, getting under the mats without yanking or pulling. It might not be the prettiest cut, but your dog will feel so much better, trust me.
- Tick and Flea Cases: Heavy infestations need serious action. When it's really bad, I do a full shave to get rid of all the bugs and start treating the skin underneath. This tick and flea grooming treatment helps your dog finally get some peace.
Double-Coated Breeds - Important Note
I never shave double-coated breeds (like Huskies and Goldens) unless there's literally no other choice for their health. Only if it's a medical emergency, like a crazy tick problem, will I go for a full shave. For me, it's always about the dog's well-being, not looks.

It's simple: your dog walks out feeling relaxed, lighter, and way happier. That's the whole point of corrective grooming for skin conditions - happy, healthy pups, not perfect haircuts.
