Corrective Dog Grooming and Health Rescues
I prioritize your dog's comfort over any styling trends. Whether it is dealing with painful matted fur or managing a tick infestation, my focus is always on getting your pup back to feeling healthy and pain-free.
This is Bebo, a lovely Shih Tzu, looking and feeling so much better after her corrective grooming session. Her painful, matted fur is gone, and she can finally move around comfortably.
Here you can see the severe condition of Bebo's coat before we started. The fur was so tightly matted against her skin that a gentle, full shave-down was the only way to provide her with immediate relief.
This is a close-up of a Husky's skin, showing a severe tick infestation that was causing extreme discomfort and health risks. In cases like this, a full shave is a medical necessity to remove all the pests.
The same Husky, now completely free of ticks after the emergency shave-down. While I don't normally shave double-coated breeds, his health and comfort had to come first. He is now ready to start his skin recovery.
Look at this happy face. This little Shih Tzu is all smiles after we carefully removed his heavily matted coat. A corrective shave-down can feel like a fresh start for a dog in discomfort.
This image shows the process of removing thick, pelted mats from the Shih Tzu's coat. This kind of matting pulls on the skin and can hide sores or parasites, making its removal essential for the dog's health.
About Featured
When a coat is severely matted, brushing only causes pain by pulling on the skin. I perform a safety shave-down using a #10 blade to get underneath the pelt without yanking, which is the only humane way to reset your dog's skin before we start any proper hygiene bath or treatment.
Dealing with pelts and parasites is rarely pretty, but it is essential for your dog's quality of life. Mats trap moisture and heat, creating the perfect breeding ground for fungal infections and painful skin sores. When I see a pup, I don't look at how they will look after; I look at where the discomfort is coming from and how we can stop it.
Why Corrective Grooming Matters
Corrective grooming is not about a style. It is about relief. When I do a matted fur relief session, the goal is to remove the carapace without causing the dog further stress. For tick and flea cases, a full shave is often a medical necessity to expose the parasites, clean the skin, and apply the required treatments. This gives your pet the best chance to heal without the constant itching and pain.
My Stance on Double-Coated Breeds
I often get asked to shave Huskies or Golden Retrievers because of the heat. My answer is almost always no. Their double coat is designed to regulate their temperature naturally. Shaving them ruins that barrier, and it is counterproductive. I only make an exception if there is a severe medical emergency, such as a heavy tick infestation where the coat is holding the parasites in place. In that case, health always comes before the vanity of a 'standard' look.
If your dog is struggling with their coat or skin, let's talk about the right path forward.
