Montessori Mathematics: Hands-on Learning for Kids
We believe math is a language children naturally speak. Our approach moves from tactile, concrete materials to abstract concepts, ensuring kids truly understand number relationships rather than just memorizing formulas.
Counting with clarity, one spindle at a time. The Spindle Box teaches the concept of zero and associates quantities with numerals. As the child places the correct number of spindles in each compartment, he is solidifying his understanding of numbers 1 through 9.
Adding it all up the Montessori way with the addition strip board. This material provides a concrete visualization of addition, allowing children to see how numbers combine to create a sum. It turns abstract math into a hands-on, logical process.
Mastering fractions, one piece at a time. The fraction skittles allow children to physically hold and manipulate parts of a whole, helping them intuitively grasp what one-half, one-third, and one-quarter really mean.
Using the Short Bead Stair, this child is exploring numbers 1 through 9 in a concrete way. This material helps him associate a specific quantity with each number and understand the progression of numbers, laying a strong foundation for future math work.
Can you solve these faster than him? After working with concrete materials, children often develop a strong capacity for mental math. Here, a child confidently answers addition problems, showing how a solid foundation leads to abstract understanding.
The Stamp Game is a brilliant material for understanding the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This child is deeply focused, using the color-coded stamps to represent units, tens, hundreds, and thousands in a dynamic calculation.
With Cards and Counters, children learn to associate quantity with number symbols and to identify odd and even numbers. This foundational math activity reinforces one-to-one correspondence and the linear nature of counting in a clear, hands-on way.
About this collection
You won't find rows of worksheets here. Instead, you'll see children physically holding fractions with skittles or counting golden beads to understand place value. This tactile approach builds a deep, intuitive sense of number relationships that sticks with them for life.
Moving From Concrete to Abstract
In our classrooms, math is never an abstract concept written on a board. We start with the physical—the concrete. When a child holds a physical bead representing a thousand, they aren't just seeing a number; they are feeling the weight and scale of it. This grounding in reality is what makes Montessori math work.
The Tools We Use
We introduce materials specifically designed to isolate one concept at a time:
- The Spindle Box: This teaches the foundational concept of zero and the quantity of numbers from 0 to 9.
- The Stamp Game: This is where children learn to perform complex operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. By moving color-coded tiles, they visualize how place values (units, tens, hundreds, thousands) interact.
- Fraction Skittles: Instead of drawing circles on paper, kids manipulate physical shapes to see exactly what 'one-half' or 'one-quarter' looks and feels like.
Building Mental Math Skills
Because the children have built these mental maps through thousands of hours of touch and movement, the transition to 'mental math' happens naturally. It isn't a forced drill. You will often see our children confidently solving addition problems in their heads, not because they memorized a table, but because they have 'seen' the math happen in their hands for years.
By the time they are ready for school-age curriculum, they aren't just calculating—they are thinking mathematically.
Dots Montessori
We are Dots Montessori, a community that has spent 12 years watching children discover the joy of learning. We don't just teach math; we create an environment where every child feels capable of tackling complex ideas through hands-on discovery.
