Behind the Scenes: My Rehearsals and Jam Sessions
Great music is often born out of informal jam sessions and dedicated rehearsals. Here is a glimpse into how I prepare and find the rhythm before the final performance.
A good musical time. This video shows a rehearsal session with my talented friends Kartikeya Vashist bhaiya on flute and Akshay bhaiya on sitar for an upcoming concert. This is where the real creative work happens.
About Behind the Scenes & Rehearsals
Before I ever step onto a stage, I spend hours in sessions like these with my fellow artists. We sit, tune, and re-tune, not just our instruments, but our connection with each other. It is in these unscripted, raw moments that we actually figure out the flow of the Tala (rhythm cycle) that will make the final concert work.
The Chemistry of Music
People often only see the finished performance under the spotlight, but the real work happens in the hours before. Whether it is a Hindustani classical recital or a fusion jam with my sitar and flute-playing bhaiyas, these sessions are where the musical chemistry builds.
When we sit down to practice, we are looking for more than just perfect notes. We are looking for the 'conversation' between the instruments. If I am playing the tabla for a vocalist or a sitar player, I have to listen deeply to their phrasing to know exactly when to add a fill or hold back to let the melody breathe.
How I Approach Rehearsals
- Listening First: I never rush into the theka (rhythm). I listen to the mood of the composition first.
- Technical Foundation: We check tuning against the root key, ensuring the tabla or pakhavaj sits perfectly in the mix.
- Creative Jamming: This is where we experiment. We might try different Laggis (variations) to see what feels right for the climax of the piece.
If you are a composer or a fellow musician looking for a collaborator who values this collaborative process, these videos show exactly how I work. It is not just about keeping time; it is about finding the soul of the track together. I am based in Delhi and always open to new creative collaborations, whether it is for a studio recording or preparing for a live concert.
