About The Art of Pen Kalamkari
When you look at these sarees, don't mistake them for digital prints. The difference is in the smell of the natural dyes and the small, human imperfections in the bamboo pen strokes. Because we source these in limited batches on 100 GSM Mysore crepe, the dye absorption varies slightly from piece to piece. If you are choosing one for a special event, remember that this fabric requires dry cleaning to keep the natural colours fresh and vibrant.
Pen Kalamkari is an ancient art form that truly comes alive when painted onto natural, porous fabrics like our 100 GSM pure Mysore crepe silk. Unlike mass-produced digital prints, every motif—whether it is mythological figures, peacocks, or intricate floral creepers—is hand-drawn using traditional bamboo pens.
Our Srikalahasti style pieces are crafted to showcase the artist's touch on the pallu and the blouse. We often pair this art with solid jewel tones like bottle green, royal blue, or mustard to make the hand-painted details pop. The fabric itself, sourced for its perfect weight and drape, ensures that the Kalamkari work sits beautifully when pleated.
When you visit our studio in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, you will notice the distinct scent of milk and alum. This is part of the authentic processing that sets our hand-painted work apart from chemical alternatives. We offer these in varied designs, from simple floral borders to elaborate storytelling panels. If you have a specific colour palette in mind or want to know which weave style, like our scallop cutwork or check patterns, pairs best with your choice of Kalamkari, let's chat. We will help you pick a drape that feels truly yours.
