We transformed a challenging, low-light Ballard Estate site into a meditative, Japandi-inspired flagship store for Bonnie & Saks. By utilizing motorized curtains and tactile geometry, we defined a clear sensory path through an irregular 1,000-square-foot floor plate.

This axonometric view illustrates the complete spatial strategy. The layout guides visitors from a textured entryway toward two cylindrical pods that anchor the gallery, creating a clear yet non-linear path of discovery through the immersive retail showroom.

The floor plan details the functional organization of the space. It shows the main entry, the placement of the sculptural tree, the capsule-like display pods, and the distinct zones for product display, discussion, and work, all designed to flow cohesively.

At the entrance, a bare tree stands as a sculptural sentinel. This organic element introduces a sense of stillness and natural texture into the austere, dark environment, setting a meditative tone for the retail experience that unfolds within.

The cylindrical display pod is shown here fully shrouded by sheer white curtains. This 'veiled' state conceals the product, building anticipation and transforming the act of shopping into a moment of gradual, controlled revelation.

Here, the motorized curtain begins to part, offering a glimpse of the work desk and consultation area within the pod. This dynamic element allows the space to be reconfigured, creating either an open gallery or a series of intimate, private zones.

Inside one of the revealed pods, a minimalist work desk stands as a functional centerpiece. The circular track lighting above provides focused illumination, creating a distinct, task-oriented zone that remains connected to the overall aesthetic of the luxury bedding store.

This view frames the bed display as a serene composition. Seen through the store's structural elements, the bed appears as a sanctuary, reinforcing the brand's ethos of quiet luxury and the home as a place of retreat.

A close-up view highlights the ephemeral quality of the sheer curtains. This material choice was critical for its ability to filter and soften light, lending a sense of transparency and quiet elegance while defining the boundaries of the space.

This short film captures the essence of the project. It showcases the interplay of movement, light, and texture, from a person walking on the soft tatami mats to the slow parting of the curtains, encapsulating the store's ethos of slow living.

About The Veiled Project: A Sensory Retail Journey

When addressing irregular column grids and limited natural light, we avoid unnecessary structural alterations. Instead, we utilize vertical volume—incorporating 13-foot ceilings and kinetic partitions—to dictate movement and define distinct pause points. Before inquiring, consider whether your retail site requires this degree of kinetic architecture or a static layout, as this distinction fundamentally dictates the mechanical detailing, budget, and procurement approach for the project.
