The Art of Light & Material

We treat natural light as a tangible building material, sculpting spaces with skylights and screens. Our work blends earthy textures like brick, concrete, and teak to create honest, atmosphere-driven interiors.

Design can be found in unexpected places. For the Shobha Residence, I repurposed an aluminum pot as a mold for a concrete skylight, casting unique circular patterns of light onto the staircase.

In the Notan Home, a geometrically patterned skylight transforms the ceiling into a light-filtering device. The sunlight creates an ever-changing pattern on the floors and walls, making the architecture feel alive.

Even in my own workspace, I apply the same principles. Here, light from a slatted window creates strong diagonal shadows, demonstrating how daylight can be a powerful tool to add drama and texture.

The perforated *jaali* screen in the House Above The Tree is one of my favorite ways to manipulate light. It filters the harsh sun and projects a beautiful, complex pattern that moves and changes, connecting the home to the rhythm of the day.

Another monochrome shot capturing the intricate shadows cast by the custom perforated screen. This highlights the texture and graphic quality of the light itself.

Light and shadow become integral parts of the decor in our studio. The strong lines cast from the window animate the wall, interacting with the text and furniture.

About The Art of Light & Material

The secret to how we use light is not just about installing larger windows; it is about controlling intensity. We often design perforated screens that filter harsh sunlight, creating moving patterns that shift across your floor throughout the day. This turns a static wall into a dynamic feature that breathes with the sun, rather than blocking it out entirely.

In our design process, daylight is a primary structural element. We do not see light as an afterthought but as a material—as vital as the concrete or teak we use. By studying the sun path and wind direction at your specific site, we manipulate how light enters your home.

For many of our projects, we rely on screens or custom-fabricated skylights to diffuse the intense Bangalore sun. This softens the interior climate while casting ever-changing shadows that define the mood of a room. Whether it is a staircase bathed in morning light from a circular skylight or a living area shaded by a perforated brick screen, these interventions minimize heat gain and reduce reliance on artificial lighting.

We lean into an earthy palette—exposed wire-cut bricks, micro-concrete, and genuine teak. These materials hold heat differently and age gracefully, developing a patina that tells the story of your home. If you are looking to move away from sterile interiors and toward a space that feels grounded in nature, this is the approach we bring to every site.
