The Art of Light and Shadow: Architectural Design in Bangalore

We treat light as our primary building material. By using skylights, courtyards, and perforated screens, we turn interiors into living spaces that shift with the sun.

Design isn't always about new materials. In this stairwell at the Shobha Residence, we reimagined a simple aluminum pot as a custom skylight, transforming the space by casting unique, circular patterns of light onto the steps.

Light is the simplest material, yet the hardest to master. Here at the Notan Home, a patterned geometric ceiling turns sunlight into an active part of the design, creating an ever-shifting pattern of shadows on the floor and walls.

Our own workspace underlines what we believe in: using daylight as a design tool. Here, light from a slatted window casts strong diagonal shadows, demonstrating how simple architectural elements can create powerful graphic compositions.

A short, poetic film exploring the play of light from a custom-designed skylight in our Cube Square project. The video captures how the leaf-patterned shadows move and change throughout the day, bringing a sense of nature and time into the home.

A bedroom designed around a private, open-to-sky courtyard. This feature allows natural light to flood the room while maintaining complete privacy, creating a serene personal sanctuary that feels connected to the outdoors.

About this collection

Our approach begins with a sun-path analysis unique to your plot. Instead of generic window placement, we study how light shifts across your floors from morning to evening, ensuring your space remains naturally lit and ventilated throughout the day without overheating.

We don’t think of light as something that just happens. In our studio, it’s a design material as tangible as brick or concrete. Whether it’s the leaf-patterned shadows cast by a custom skylight in our Cube Square project or the diffused glow entering through a perforated screen at the House Above The Tree, every detail is engineered to change with the sun’s position.

We rely on context-sensitive architecture. By listening to the climate of our local ooru (city), we create spaces that prioritize comfort. Using skylights, interior courtyards, and brick jaalis, we manipulate light to reduce artificial energy dependence, making your home feel naturally vibrant. We’ve been practicing this approach in Bangalore for 15 years, ensuring that every design choice has a clear, functional purpose.

Our process involves structural coordination, integrating features like cantilevers, skylights, and floating staircases with precision. We document these through full Good For Construction drawings, covering civil dimensions, electrical layouts, and MEP systems to ensure the design vision is realized on-site. When you work with us, you are not just getting an aesthetic concept; you are getting a complete set of technical documents and milestone-based site monitoring, ensuring the light and shadow effects we design for are actually achievable in your space. We invite you to a conversation to discuss your site's orientation and how we can make your future home respond to the passing of time.

We’re Collage Architecture Studio. To us, a house is just a structure until you invite the landscape in. We spend our time figuring out how to make light dance in your living room and how to use materials like brick and concrete so they actually get better with age.
