Wildlife and Farm Animal Protection
We fight against the illegal wildlife trade and advocate for farmed animal welfare. Our work extends beyond our shelter doors to ensure every life, from exotic species to livestock, receives respect and compassion.
This image reveals the tragic truth behind the illegal wildlife trade. Thousands of turtles are crammed into boxes, treated like inanimate cargo. This is the cruel reality for animals sold as "exotic pets."
We are routinely called to assist customs and wildlife officials in stabilizing smuggled animals. This was one such case where we witnessed 2,500 turtles seized at the Bangalore airport, a stark reminder of the scale of this cruel trade.
Crammed into boxes and treated like cargo, these turtles were not only victims of cruelty but also a public health risk. They tested positive for salmonella, a bacteria that can spread to humans, showing the dangerous intersection of animal cruelty and zoonotic disease.
Seized. Smuggled. Returned. Euthanised. This is the tragic lifecycle for many animals caught in the illegal pet trade. The demand for exotic pets directly fuels this cycle of suffering and death.
This case highlights two crises: animal cruelty and the risk of zoonotic diseases. The 2,500 turtles seized in India had to be humanely euthanized in Singapore after salmonella was detected, a heartbreaking outcome driven by the demand for exotic pets.
Why does this keep happening? The demand for "cool" or "rare" pets as status symbols drives brutal smuggling networks and creates immense animal suffering. This is a buyer driven crisis; if there is no demand, there will be no trade.
Millions of farmed animals live in conditions of unimaginable cruelty. We support sanctuaries that give these animals a second chance at life, and we advocate for making more compassionate, plant based food choices to end this cycle of suffering.
About this collection
Our teams are frequently on the ground supporting airport customs and local wildlife officials to stabilize exotic animals seized from illegal smuggling. We do not just rescue; we document the brutal reality of these trades to push for policy change. If you witness the illegal trade of wildlife or suspect animal cruelty in your area, do not intervene directly—contact our team for expert guidance on the legal steps to take.
The illegal wildlife trade is not just about exotic animals in cages; it is a public health crisis and a massive welfare failure. We have witnessed firsthand the results of demand for 'exotic pets' in Bengaluru—thousands of turtles, smuggled in cramped boxes, often suffering from disease and neglect. When we assist authorities like BIAL and the Customs department, we are not just saving lives; we are stopping the spread of potential zoonotic diseases and exposing the brutal supply chains behind the pet industry.
Beyond the exotic trade, our advocacy extends to farm animals. Millions of animals suffer in factory farming conditions, rarely seeing the sun or knowing comfort. We support the network of sanctuaries across India that provide these animals with their first real taste of freedom.
How you can make a difference:
- Question the demand: The trade only exists because people want 'rare' pets. Choosing not to own exotic animals is the single most effective way to dry up this market.
- Drive with care: Wildlife displacement happens when habitats are destroyed. Driving carefully in wooded areas is a simple, daily act of protection.
- Eat with compassion: Our food choices dictate the industry. Moving toward plant-based options reduces the demand for factory farming.
- Know the law: Relocation of community animals is illegal, and the trade of scheduled wildlife species is a serious offense under Indian law.
