Even our youngest students, like 5-year-old Inara, prepare for Trinity exams. Here she is practicing "We Will Rock You," a recognized piece in the syllabus, showing that formal training can start early and be fun.
This video shows a typical one-on-one session focused on Trinity exam material. I guide Inara through the piece, ensuring her timing and technique meet the exam standards.
Our exam preparation is not just for drummers. This student is practicing his vocal performance for a Trinity Grade Exam, showing the breadth of musical training we offer at our school.

About Trinity Exam Preparation
The Trinity exam is technical, but passing it requires more than just playing the notes correctly. In my studio, we focus on the exam-day reality—managing the backing track volume, the posture examiners look for, and the specific stick technique for each grade. My goal is to make sure your child feels completely comfortable in the soundproof room before the actual day arrives.
Building the Right Foundation
Passing a Trinity grade isn't just about reading music; it's about consistency. Whether your child is starting with Initial Grade or working towards higher levels, my approach is to treat practice like a habit, not a chore. We break down the syllabus into three parts: the technical work, the performance pieces, and the supporting tests.
What Happens in a Prep Session?
- Technical Mastery: We drill the basics until they are second nature. 'Back straight' and 'breathing' are just as important as the drumming itself.
- Mock Exams: We simulate the exam environment in my Nirvana Country studio. This helps kids overcome performance anxiety and get used to playing under observation.
- Performance Pieces: We choose songs that align with the syllabus but keep things engaging. If a child enjoys the track, they practice harder.
- Support: Parents receive periodic feedback on progress, and I am always available to discuss any areas where the student might be struggling, be it timing, rudiments, or sight-reading.
Why Start Early?
Many parents ask when to start. I believe the earlier, the better, provided the child is curious. We use kid-sized drum kits so even five-year-olds can maintain proper posture and grip, ensuring they don't develop bad habits that are hard to correct later. The goal is to build a confident musician, not just an exam-taker.
Brilliance School of Music
I have been training young musicians for fifteen years, and I believe in getting the fundamentals right from day one. I work closely with each student to refine their technique, build their confidence, and make the hard work of music theory feel manageable. Watching my students turn into performers is why I do this.
