Spin is a mental game, not just a physical one. I help bowlers move beyond just hitting the net by teaching them how to read batters, manage pressure, and build a tactical plan for every ball.

Here we are in a tactical session, planning variations. I'm explaining to the bowlers that the purpose of variations is to be unpredictable and make the batters take risks.

To pick more wickets, you must focus on the controllables. I'm teaching this bowler to focus on his trajectory, speed, and length, things he can control, rather than worrying about what happens after the ball pitches.

Execution is the key. Here, I'm demonstrating how changing the length on the same line can completely change the batter's response. This is the kind of skill and awareness we have to learn as spinners.

To improve faster, you have to think about every ball you bowl. I'm telling this player that deliberate practice is a must. You have to value each ball like you value money.

Mindset is everything in practice. I'm telling this young bowler that it's okay to bowl bad balls, you have to enjoy them too. If you have a bad mindset, you will not be ready to improve.

A look at a strategical nets session. I'm advising the bowler to assess the batter's strong points and bowl to a plan. Here, the batter is strong on the back foot, so I'm telling him to bowl on the wicket line.

Building young spinners involves teaching them game awareness and match mindset. I'm telling this young bowler to first focus on his own strengths and areas before trying to read the batter.

This is our match preparation. I'm giving the bowlers a target for the session: the first 15 minutes to execute what they've been working on, and the next 15 minutes to bowl strategically to create dot ball pressure.

Here's a tip on how to improve your spin and revolutions. It's all about effort from the lower body. If you don't put effort from your lower body, your upper body will lack stability.

This is our game plan board from an open nets session. We set specific, individual goals for each batter and bowler to ensure they are practicing with purpose and professionalism.

About The Thinker's Game: Tactics & Mindset

The biggest mistake I see is bowlers treating every ball the same way. Whether you are an off-spinner or a leg-spinner, you need to understand the why behind your delivery. If you cannot explain why you are bowling a specific line or length, you are just throwing the ball, not spinning it.
