Healing Children Through the Power of Stories
We create safe Imagination Havens for children to heal, dream, and rebuild. Explore our community programs in Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Bangalore.
This is what pure joy looks like. In our libraries, we create safe spaces where children can express themselves freely. Sometimes, happiness doesn't need words, just a moment to dance and feel seen. This is the healing power of stories and community in action.
The moment a story comes to life. Here at our Library of Flowers, our volunteer captivates an audience of eager listeners. Every raised hand is a sign of curiosity sparked and a connection made, showing the immediate impact of our storytelling programs.
Our founder, Seena Jacob, shares the personal story that started it all. She explains how childhood stories provided an escape and a sense of hope, inspiring her to leave the corporate world and build Bookwallah on the belief that imagination can heal children of trauma.
This is the heart of hope: our community of over 140 volunteers and the children whose lives they touch. We believe healing takes time, and stories need changemakers. Together, we show up week after week to build a brighter future.
A smile that says it all. After a story session, the magic continues with creative activities that help children process themes and express themselves. This is where a simple story transforms into confidence, creativity, and connection.
From a room with broken walls to a vibrant sanctuary of hope. This is our 'Library of Flowers' in Mumbai, a new haven for 65 brave girls. We build more than just libraries; we build spaces where dreams can take root and flourish.
Are you ready to lead with purpose? Our Project Leader Fellowship is a unique opportunity to gain real leadership experience by managing a team, overseeing a library, and making a direct impact. This isn't just a volunteer role; it's a heart-led journey.
A story is more than words on a page. For a child who has faced trauma, it's a lifeline. This video explains our core mission: to untangle children from trauma, one story at a time, and give them the courage to dream again.
About Featured
You have likely seen our vibrant murals and smiling faces in the images above, that is the result of our S.T.O.R.Y. method in action. Every library we build and every session we host is designed to provide emotional safety for children who have survived trauma, turning a quiet room into a place where they can finally find their own brave endings.
At Bookwallah, we believe that stories are more than just words on a page. They are tools for resilience. Since our founding fifteen years ago, we have built over 25 Imagination Havens—sanctuaries where children rescued from difficult circumstances can access literature, engage in creative play, and process their experiences in a safe, judgment-free environment.
Our Approach to Healing
We utilize the S.T.O.R.Y. method to ensure our sessions are trauma-informed and emotionally resonant. Our volunteers, whom we call Changemakers, do not just read aloud. They facilitate interactive sessions that allow children to explore themes of courage and kindness. Whether it is a Magic Crate portable library deployed to a remote shelter or a permanent Library of Flowers renovation in Mumbai, every project serves a single purpose: to give a child the permission to dream again.
Get Involved
Our work is only possible because of our community. We are constantly looking for passionate individuals in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad to join our storytelling sessions or take on leadership roles through our fellowships. If you are an organization or an individual looking to sponsor a library, you are not just funding a room. You are investing in the long-term emotional growth of children who need it most. Our Year 1 program bundle ensures that once a space is built, it remains active, staffed, and filled with joy for 52 weeks a year.
Bookwallah
I started Bookwallah fifteen years ago because stories were my own escape during a rough childhood. I wanted to build a place where kids who have seen too much can find hope, build resilience, and just be kids again through the magic of reading.
