About Building Havens of Hope: Our Libraries
We don't just put up shelves; we fundamentally transform spaces to change how a child feels the moment they walk in. Whether it’s converting a stark classroom into the colorful 'Library of Flowers' in Mumbai or setting up a portable 'Magic Crate' in a remote shelter, every design choice—from the murals to the reading rugs—is calibrated to create a sense of safety and wonder. You aren't just sponsoring books; you are giving a child a sanctuary where they can finally pause, breathe, and choose a new story for themselves.
Building an 'Imagination Haven' is about creating an environment that feels like a warm hug. For many of the children we serve—often those who have lived through child labor, trafficking, or significant instability—a quiet, beautiful space to call their own is a rare experience.
Our libraries in Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad are designed to be that escape. We move beyond simple infrastructure. We incorporate professional murals, curated book collections that balance international hits like Harry Potter with Indian context stories from authors like Sudha Murty, and seating that invites a child to curl up and get lost in a book.
The Impact of Space
When we launch a project, like our 'Sea of Stories' library, we see an immediate shift. The environment itself does half the healing. Silence becomes a canvas rather than a barrier, and the vibrant colors offer a psychological signal that this is a safe place to dream. We catalog every book using our proprietary S.T.O.R.Y system, ensuring that when a volunteer leads a session, they have the exact materials needed to spark conversations about resilience and hope.
How We Can Partner
- Magic Crate (₹21,000–₹25,000): Perfect for smaller community hubs. We deliver a portable library unit with 70+ books, puppets, and wands to get the storytelling started immediately.
- Annual Story Program (₹5,80,000–₹6,20,000): This keeps the library alive. We fund 52 weekly storytelling sessions, volunteer training in 'Trauma Informed Care,' and the craft supplies that turn a library into an active community.
- Turnkey 'Imagination Haven' (₹12,50,000–₹13,50,000): The full transformation. We handle civil renovations, murals, shelving, 500+ books, and the first year of operations, including a dedicated Project Leader Fellow.
Bookwallah
I started Bookwallah 15 years ago because stories were my own escape hatch when things got rough. We don't just build libraries; we build sanctuaries where children who have seen too much can find their own brave endings. If you are ready to help us open up these worlds, let’s talk.
