We transform ordinary rooms into safe spaces where stories help children build resilience. See how our weekly sessions use the S.T.O.R.Y. method to turn reading time into moments of genuine connection.

A volunteer uses sign language to share "The Lion Inside" with deaf and mute children, who are joyfully engaged. This is what our Sea of Stories library was made for: connection beyond words.

A quiet, powerful moment from our first session at the Sea of Stories library, where a volunteer interprets a story for a deaf child, bridging worlds with a book.

The joy of being understood. Our volunteers create a safe, expressive space for children at the Sea of Stories library, using gestures and expressions to make the story come alive.

A child gives a happy wave during a library session. We are so grateful to be back in our libraries, sharing these moments of connection and bringing smiles back to life.

A volunteer reads to an engaged group of children. These quiet moments, where a child finds the story they need, are why we do what we do.

All smiles and peace signs with our volunteers and children. Being back in our libraries, surrounded by this energy, reminds us of the strength of our community.

A glimpse into the quiet focus of our story sessions. There's a silence that isn't empty but filled with listening, healing, and the safety to just be.

About Our Storytelling Sessions in Action

Our sessions go far beyond simple reading. We actively incorporate felt puppets, drawing, and interactive craft-making to help children process emotions in a tangible way. For our specialized sessions, like the Sea of Stories program for deaf and mute children, we adapt our methods entirely to visual cues and gestures, ensuring that every child is fully included in the narrative experience.

At the heart of our work is the S.T.O.R.Y. method. This structured approach allows our volunteers to move past surface-level reading and guide children through themes of courage, kindness, and hope. Whether we are in a bustling community center or a quiet shelter, the goal remains the same: creating a consistent, safe environment where children feel heard and valued.

How We Bring Stories to Life

We do not just read books. Our volunteers act as facilitators who help children connect with characters and situations. If a story is about overcoming a challenge, we might follow it up with a craft activity where the child creates a puppet representing that character. This helps them internalize the story's lesson, making the feelings of the book their own.

Inclusivity at the Core

We believe that access to imagination should never be limited by ability. Our Sea of Stories library is a prime example of this commitment. In these sessions, we rely on non-verbal communication, sign language, and expressive storytelling to ensure that deaf and mute children have the same access to the healing power of narratives as their hearing peers. It is about bridging worlds with books, not just translating words.

Where We Operate

Our volunteer-led storytelling programs are currently active in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad. Each city has its own unique community of changemakers who visit partner shelter homes weekly. By maintaining a consistent presence, we build trust with the children, allowing them to look forward to their storytime as a reliable, happy part of their week. If you are looking to volunteer in any of these locations, we provide the training and materials to help you lead your first session with confidence.

Bookwallah started from my own need for stories during a difficult childhood. We are a community of volunteers who believe that every child deserves the chance to dream, and we are simply here to hold the space where that magic happens.
