My Process: Creating Hyper-Realistic Portraits

Behind every 40-hour sketch is a lot of patience and detail. See how I turn your reference photos into hand-drawn, realistic art.

Sometimes the art tells its own story. This is a creative piece showing a hyper-realistic eye drawing on torn paper, held against a natural background.

A slightly different angle of the same artistic eye drawing, showing how the environment can change the mood of the artwork.

A finished portrait of a nun, showcasing my ability to render gentle expressions and the soft folds of fabric.

The portrait in progress, showing the use of a brush for smooth blending.

Guess who? The first part of a drawing, starting with just a single, hyper-realistic eye.

The second part of the drawing, revealing the nose and the start of the mustache.

The third part of the drawing, completing the mustache and mouth of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

About The Artist's Craft: A Look at the Details

Realism is about patience. I use the grid method to get your proportions spot on, and then I spend 40 to 45 hours layering graphite and charcoal to capture the depth in your expression. This is not a quick print, but a slow, hand-drawn study that brings the details of your photo to life on heavy, acid-free paper.

Why I Take 40+ Hours

People often ask why a single portrait takes me a few days. The answer is simple: texture. To achieve realistic skin tones or the subtle folds in clothing, I build layers of graphite, ranging from 2B to 10B. I use brushes to blend the charcoal, creating soft transitions that a quick sketch simply cannot replicate.

My Process

  1. The Reference: The quality of your final sketch depends on your photo. A high-resolution, well-lit image allows me to see the tiny details that make a face unique. If you have two separate photos, I can combine them into one frame for couple portraits.
  2. The Drawing: I work on 200 GSM acid-free cartridge paper. I focus on structural integrity first, using the grid method, before moving into the shading phase.
  3. The Finish: Once the drawing is complete, I seal it with a matte fixative spray. This is crucial for charcoal work as it prevents smudging and ensures the deep blacks stay crisp for years.
  4. Safe Shipping: I do not just mail a sketch. I roll the artwork carefully and pack it inside a rigid PVC pipe. It is weather-sealed to ensure it reaches you in Chandigarh, Gujarat, or anywhere else in India without a single fold or crease.

If you are looking for a gift that feels personal or a memory kept on paper, just send me a message. I am ready when you are.
