Pichwai is all about patience. I use heavy-duty 10oz cotton canvas to ensure the surface holds the weight of the paint and imitation gold foil without sagging. Each piece involves high-pigment acrylics to capture the deep blues, vibrant lotus pinks, and bright yellows that define this traditional style.
My process is straightforward. We start by discussing the theme, whether you want a peaceful Buddha or the traditional cows and lotuses. I prepare the canvas with double-priming to ensure the colors stay true for years. If you choose the gold-leaf option, I apply the foil on the jewelry, halos, and borders, sealing it with a specialized fixative to prevent oxidation.
