About Saree Care & Storage Solutions
The biggest mistake most people make is letting heavy silk sarees sag on thin hangers or crushing them in a trunk. My hanger folding and box folding methods are designed to keep the pleats crisp for months, whether you are storing them long-term or packing for a wedding destination. You do not need expensive equipment or specialized storage units—just a few simple hacks to keep your precious weaves looking showroom-new.
Why Saree Storage Matters
Many of us treat a saree like a regular dress, folding it and putting it away. But a Kanjeevaram or any heavy silk fabric has a memory. If you fold it the same way for years, the creases become permanent, and the fabric eventually weakens along those lines. My storage techniques focus on two things: maintaining the integrity of the weave and keeping your pleats pre-set so you can be ready in five minutes.
My Signature Folding Techniques
- Box Folding: This is my go-to for travel. By folding the saree into a specific box shape, you save space and prevent the pallu from getting tangled or crushed. It is the perfect method for courier dispatch or fitting multiple sarees into a single suitcase.
- Hanger Folding: For daily wear or sarees you want to keep 'ready-to-wear,' hanger folding is a lifesaver. It keeps the weight of the fabric evenly distributed, preventing the sagging that ruins the drape.
Pro-Tips for Long-Term Preservation
- Use the Right Covers: Never use plastic bags that don't breathe. I recommend using specialized 14x18 inch transparent covers for box folding. They protect against dust and moisture while letting you see exactly which saree is inside without unfolding it.
- Jute Covers for Storage: For long-term storage, breathable jute covers are your best friend. They prevent the 'musty' smell and keep the zari (gold thread) from tarnishing.
- The 'No-Heat' Rule: You will notice in my tutorials that I focus on clean, precise folds rather than heavy ironing. Proper folding is the best way to avoid unnecessary heat, which can damage delicate silk fibers over time.
If you want to master these techniques—or even turn them into a professional service—my workshops cover everything from box folding to advanced packing for safe transit.
