My Approach to Tattoo Modification

I look at how the ink has aged, where it sits on the body, and how we can best incorporate those lines into a new, fresh concept.

How I Conceal Old Ink

I focus on three key techniques to ensure the old tattoo vanishes:

• Distraction Geometry: Instead of trying to hide the old tattoo with solid blocks of black, I use complex textures, scales, or organic shapes (like petals or tribal patterns) that naturally draw the eye away from the underlying design.
• Strategic Layering: I use varying shades of grey-wash and dense black packing to build depth. By creating a darker, more detailed foreground, the background—the old tattoo—effectively disappears.
• Scaling: To achieve a seamless look, the new piece needs room to breathe. I usually scale the cover-up to be 2x or 3x the size of the original. This creates the necessary negative space to make the new art pop.
