Custom Freehand Tattoos and Expert Cover-Ups
Your skin is dynamic, not a flat surface. We use freehand techniques to map designs to your body's unique flow and offer honest, expert assessments for covering up old ink.

About The Custom Process: Freehand & Cover-Ups
When we go freehand, I am not just tracing a printout. I am drawing directly on your muscle and bone structure so the tattoo moves with you, not against you. For cover-ups, we do not just 'blast over' the old design; we assess the scar tissue and pigment depth first to make sure the new ink holds without fading back to the old one. This honesty about what is physically possible is the only way we work.
Why Freehand Matters
Most tattoo shops rely on stencils printed from a machine. While that works for simple designs, it often fails to account for the curve of a shoulder, the wrap of an arm, or the natural flow of your joints. Freehand allows us to sketch the design on your skin while you are standing or moving, ensuring the final piece fits your anatomy perfectly. This is how we achieve that 'flow' look that makes a tattoo feel like part of you, rather than a sticker applied to your skin.
The Reality of Cover-Ups
Covering up an old or unwanted tattoo is not magic. It is a technical challenge that requires specific planning. Here is how we handle it:
- Assessment: We first look at the age, depth, and ink density of your existing tattoo. If it is too dark or scarred, we might suggest a few laser removal sessions first to lighten the area.
- The 3x Rule: To successfully hide old pigment, the new design typically needs to be 3x larger and significantly darker than the original. We will be upfront with you if your desired design is not complex enough to mask the old one.
- Freehand Mapping: We draw the new design over the old one to ensure we have enough ink density to mask the underlying lines.
We provide one free touch-up session after healing, because with heavy cover-up work, skin behaves differently than with fresh tattoos. Whether you are in Hulimavu or JP Nagar, come by the studio so we can take a look at your existing piece and discuss the real options.
