Wabi-Sabi Textured Wall Art for Modern Homes
Finding beauty in the weathered, the rustic, and the imperfect. My Wabi-Sabi collection explores the stories told by time, bringing grounded, textured narratives into your living space.
'TEXTURA' is a large-scale piece inspired by the ruggedness of a tree trunk. I built up layers of mixed media on wood to capture the deep ridges and grooves, creating a powerful statement on resilience and natural beauty.
A full view of an artwork from my 'Rooted in Strength' series. The piece uses heavy texture and earthy tones to evoke the feeling of a strong, ancient tree trunk, symbolizing stability and endurance.
Titled 'THE MOONLIGHT', this piece from my Wabi-Sabi series uses fabric and mixed media on wood. The textured drapes frame a central, glowing moon, creating a dramatic interplay of shadow, light, and rustic texture.
This artwork is a tribute to the roots of nature, with intertwining patterns that celebrate the beauty of imperfection. The flowing, vein-like textures are inspired by the Wabi-Sabi philosophy of finding grace in natural forms.
'The Rustic Road' is a complete view of a piece where a textured path winds through an earthy landscape. The golden line tracing the road's spine represents a glimmer of hope on a long journey.
A 10x10 inch Wabi-Sabi piece where I explored deep, complex textures on canvas. The blend of earthy browns and cool blues creates a sense of aged, weathered beauty, perfect for an intimate space.
This vertical Wabi-Sabi artwork on paper shows textures that seem to drip and melt down the surface. The earthy tones and coarse finish are designed to feel raw and elemental, like a geological formation.
Inspired by old homes, this rustic artwork combines corrugated textures with thick paste. The layers of green and gold over a weathered base evoke memories of peeling paint and the charm of aged surfaces.
Here is one of my rustic, textured pieces displayed in a contemporary living space. The vertical lines and earthy green tones create a calming, natural focal point next to the bookshelf.
In this video, I talk about my Wabi-Sabi series and how it's inspired by my childhood memories of ancestral homes. I explain how the chipped walls, peeled paint, and rustic textures translate into my art, with gold accents representing cherished golden memories.
About Wabi-Sabi: The Beauty of Imperfection
Because these pieces rely on building up thick, heavy layers of texture—using clay, paste, and sand—they are essentially permanent, structural fixtures in your room. Before we start work on a full 4ft x 3ft canvas, I always create a 6-inch physical sample of the exact texture and color finish we have discussed. This ensures that the way the light hits the ridges in your home matches what you imagined, as the final piece is too substantial to tweak once the materials cure.
The Philosophy Behind the Texture
My Wabi-Sabi series is an exploration of the Japanese philosophy that finds grace in imperfection. When you look closely at these pieces, you are seeing reflections of my own childhood memories: the chipped walls of ancestral homes, the peeling paint on old doors, and the weathering of metal roofs over time.
How I Build Each Piece
I do not paint with standard strokes. Instead, I build the surface up.
- Mediums: I mix modeling paste, sand, clay, and reinforced composites to create high-relief surfaces.
- The Golden Accents: You will notice recurring veins of gold across many of my Wabi-Sabi works. These are my way of capturing the 'golden memories' I hold onto—a reminder that even in things that are rusted or broken, there is a glimmer of beauty and value.
- Depth and Shadow: Because these artworks are sculptural, they change throughout the day. As the sun moves and your room lighting shifts, the shadows cast by the ridges and cracks change, making the piece feel alive.
Practical Considerations for Your Space
- Installation: These pieces are heavy. I ensure every artwork comes with industrial-grade D-rings and wiring, ready for a secure wall mount.
- Maintenance: While the surfaces look rugged, they are sealed with UV-protective varnish. Dusting is simple; a dry, soft-bristled brush is all you need to keep the textures clean.
- The Process: We start with a conversation about your room's color palette and lighting. Once we align on the vision, I create the physical texture sample. Only after you approve that sample do I move to the final canvas, ensuring the artwork feels like a natural extension of your home.
