About Training for the Ring
The biggest mistake most owners make is waiting too long to start. We begin with puppies as young as 3.5 months, not just to teach them obedience, but to build the muscle memory for free-stacking. When we are on the Chikkabanavara grounds, I focus on gait and conditioning first. If your dog doesn't have the trot and the drive, they won't hold the stack properly even if they know the pose.
Building the Show Foundation
A dog in the conformation ring needs to look natural, not forced. Namma dogs alli, we don't just put them in a pose; we train them to stack on command. We use natural grass fields in Chikkabanavara for gait training because pavement doesn't teach a dog to drive properly.
Why Ring Training is Different
Obedience is about control. Ring training is about expression and performance.
- Free Stacking: We train the dog to shift their weight and hold that breed-specific pose without me constantly adjusting their legs. This takes patience, but it is what judges look for.
- Desensitization: The ring is loud and full of strangers. We introduce bite checks, teeth inspections, and testicle exams early so it becomes a non-issue.
- Handling: If you aren't comfortable in the ring, I handle them. I focus on piloting to highlight the dog's virtues and minimize any faults.
The Commitment
This is not a weekend hobby. If you want results for KCI-sanctioned events, we need consistency. Whether it is a German Shepherd or any other purebred, we train for the trot, the posture, and the calm that wins titles. Aarambikkalaangala? (Shall we start?)
