Behind the Scenes: My Mehendi Art Process
Ever wonder how your mehendi design comes to life? From the organic henna I mix by hand to the initial sketches for custom storytelling pieces, here is a look at the process behind my 12 years of work.
A satisfying look at the process, from the simple line art of a groom in a palanquin to the fully detailed and shaded final piece.
The first step in a beautiful bridal design. This video shows the clean, confident outlines of a jharokha border being created.

My handmade, natural henna cones, ready to be delivered and used to create beautiful art. I never use chemical cones.
Practice makes perfect. I'm always sketching and refining motifs, like these peacock designs, to keep my skills sharp.

About The Art in Progress
My process always starts with the henna itself, which I make at home using 100% natural, triple-sifted powder and essential oils. Before I ever touch a cone to your skin, I spend time testing the consistency and sketching out the composition on paper. Whether we are planning a complex bridal portrait or a traditional floral design, this preparation is exactly why you get that deep, rich, reddish-brown stain that lasts through your wedding events.
From Concept to Stain
Being a mehendi artist in Mumbai is about more than just filling space with patterns. It is about understanding what you want and how to make it happen on your skin.
The Foundation: Organic Henna
I am very particular about my materials. I never use chemical cones. Every cone you see in my kit is hand-rolled and filled with an organic paste I prepare myself. I soak the powder for 24 to 48 hours to ensure the best dye release. This patience is non-negotiable because it is the only way to get that vibrant, dark colour that every bride wants for her big day.
Sketching Your Story
When I work on custom 'Love Story' designs, the process is very collaborative. I don't just start drawing. We sit down to discuss the elements—your hobbies, the place you first met, or even specific figures like the Eiffel Tower or your pets. I sketch these out first to ensure the proportions look right. This allows me to combine detailed, realistic sketching with traditional mehendi elements like jaal (net) work and lotuses, ensuring the final piece feels like a cohesive work of art rather than a jumbled mess of drawings.
Precision in Every Line
Whether it is a minimal design for a festival or a full-arm bridal piece, I focus on the flow of the design. You can see in my work that I prioritise clean, sharp lines. When I am doing portraits or figure work, I use a finer needle-tip to get those realistic details on faces and outfits. It takes longer—sometimes 5 to 6 hours for the full bridal portrait package—but taking that extra time is what creates a design that truly stands out in your wedding photos.
Anjali Doshi
I am Anjali, and for the last 12 years, I have been obsessed with not just the final look, but every single line that gets us there. I truly believe that beautiful mehendi starts with the quality of the paste and the thought behind the design, whether it is a simple pattern or a full-blown story.
