Cultural, Hospitality and Public Space Design
We approach public and hospitality design not as generic infrastructure, but as storytelling. From mindful retreats along the Ganges to performance pavilions in Kochi, our work fosters community connection through architecture that respects its specific context.
Our conceptual design for the Dhun Imagination Center in Jaipur. This render shows the transformation of a historic haveli into a center for artists, complemented by a newly designed 'baoli' or stepwell, creating a space for community interaction.
A frontal view of the proposed Dhun Imagination Center and its stepwell. The design creates a powerful dialogue between the solid, historic edifice and the void of the communal water body.
Another perspective of the Dhun Imagination Center concept, highlighting the scale of the stepwell and its potential as a venue for gatherings and performances.
Our project, Ekaanta - Mindversity on the Ganges, has been featured in numerous design publications. This video collage celebrates the recognition of this unique space for mindfulness and learning in Haridwar.
The Koodaaram Pavilion, designed for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, featured in IFJ Magazine. This video shows the published article, which details the project's design and its role as a temporary public performance space.
A view of the Koodaaram Pavilion's exterior, showing how the semi-transparent structure integrates with the surrounding trees at Cabral Yard in Kochi.
A craftsman at work during the construction of the Koodaaram Pavilion. The project celebrated local materials and building techniques, particularly the use of bamboo.
The construction of the Koodaaram Pavilion in progress. The image shows the assembly of the steel and bamboo framework, a process completed in just two months.
The roof structure of the Koodaaram Pavilion under construction, showcasing the intricate weaving of bamboo and the underlying steel frame.
A detail of the Koodaaram Pavilion's roof, where bamboo poles converge at a central oculus. This design element fills the space with natural light and creates a stunning visual focus.
About Cultural, Hospitality & Public Spaces
When we design a public space or hospitality project, we begin by analyzing the site's unique narrative, not just its square footage. For our Koodaaram pavilion at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, we prioritized transience, building a structure that could be dismantled entirely to protect the site's natural rhythm. We apply this same rigor to hospitality, ensuring every design, from a floating cruise to a cliffside retreat, respects the local climate and community rather than imposing a generic architectural form.
Architecture as a Catalyst for Connection
We believe public architecture should do more than house activities. It should act as a catalyst for interaction and contemplation. Whether it is the Nirvana Cruise in Goa or the Ekaanta Mindversity on the Ganges, we view our role as architects to shift perspectives. We look for the 'void' in a site—the space between structures—where true community happens.
Our Process for Public and Hospitality Projects
We integrate technical precision with deep cultural research. For hospitality, we avoid standard layouts that ignore the environment. Instead, we use site-specific zoning, biophilic elements, and passive cooling techniques to ensure the building performs as well as it looks.
Our approach involves:
- Material Exploration: We investigate local building techniques, such as the bamboo and steel framework used for the Koodaaram pavilion, to ensure sustainability is part of the design foundation, not an afterthought.
- Site-Specific Narratives: We translate local history into modern forms. For instance, our interpretation of stepwells for commercial facade designs helps integrate modern buildings into their historical surroundings.
- Climate Responsiveness: We utilize passive cooling, stack ventilation, and light-well integration to create comfortable spaces without relying solely on mechanical systems.
Why Partner with Us?
Our services span the entire project lifecycle, from master planning and conceptualization to detailed facade engineering and site coordination. We collaborate extensively with engineers and local vendors to realize complex geometries, ensuring that your hospitality or public project is not only iconic but also functionally resilient. We are constantly exploring new methods to respect the local vibe of a place, whether it is in the heart of Delhi or the coastal landscape of Goa.
Anagram Architects
We are Anagram Architects. We started out simply wanting to make people feel something—the way a powerful song stays with you long after it ends. We are a team based in Delhi and Goa, obsessing over details like metal louvers and terracotta facades because we believe spaces should spark genuine joy.
