A bored dog is usually a destructive one. I’ll show you easy, everyday ways to keep your dog mentally stimulated, from DIY puzzles to scent games, so they stay calm and happy.

Rainy days don't have to be boring. Here are four great indoor activities, including puzzles, playing tug, and practicing training, to keep your dog happy and mentally tired.

'Find It' games are a fantastic way to engage your dog's natural sniffing ability. Watch how my dogs search the house to find a hidden toy, turning the living room into a fun puzzle.

Does your dog love to shred paper or cardboard? It's a natural instinct! I show you how to provide a safe and legal outlet for this behavior, saving your shoes and furniture.

Nose work is one of the most fulfilling activities for a dog. Using a snuffle mat, as shown here, encourages them to sniff out their food, which is calming and mentally stimulating.

About this collection

Enrichment isn't about buying expensive toys or gadgets. It’s about using your dog’s natural instincts—like their need to sniff, hunt, or even shred—and channeling that energy into games. Whether it’s a simple DIY cardboard box puzzle or a snuffle mat, these activities can turn a hyper, restless dog into a calm one without you needing to spend hours on formal training.

Why Enrichment Matters

Think of mental stimulation as the equivalent of a long, tiring walk for your dog's brain. If your dog is constantly chewing your shoes or acting out, they aren't necessarily being 'naughty.' They’re bored. Canine enrichment engages their senses, fulfilling their innate needs to scavenge and explore, which helps settle them down significantly.

Simple DIY Enrichment Ideas

You don't need a fancy setup to start. Here are my go-to methods:

  • The Shredding Station: If your dog loves tearing up Amazon packages or paper, stop fighting it. Give them a safe cardboard box with treats hidden inside. It’s messy, but it’s a legal outlet for that chewing instinct.
  • Scent Games ('Find It'): Use their nose. Hide high-value treats around the living room and encourage them to hunt. This builds focus and confidence.
  • Snuffle Mats: These are brilliant for mealtime. Instead of a bowl, scatter kibble on a snuffle mat. It slows down fast eaters and keeps them occupied for 10-15 minutes.
  • Tug & Fetch: Even 10 minutes of active play with a rope toy releases pent-up energy and strengthens the bond between you.

Troubleshooting Boredom

On rainy days in Bengaluru when outdoor walks aren't possible, these indoor activities are lifesavers. They help manage reactivity and keep your dog mentally tired. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog. If you’re struggling with high-energy behaviors, let’s talk about tailoring an enrichment plan that fits your dog’s unique personality.
