My Artistic Journey: Returning to Ink

I am a guy who prefers a ballpoint pen and a sketchbook to capture the real, messy, and beautiful parts of life in Mumbai.

This is my 'Art vs Artist' for 2024. It shows me alongside some of my favorite ink drawings from the year. This year was about returning to basics, and though it was challenging, I'm proud of the work I created.

About this collection

I stopped trying to make everything look perfect. When I shifted from digital tools back to simple ink on paper, I found that the imperfections in my sketches actually tell the real story of a place or a moment. Whether I am at a live event or leading a workshop, my focus is always on capturing the character and the mood rather than creating a pristine, polished image.

My creative path has been a continuous loop of learning and unlearning. For a long time, I relied on digital tools, but I felt a growing disconnect from the physicality of art. Returning to my sketchbooks, brush pens, and ink was not just a stylistic choice, but a necessity to reconnect with my work.

This collection, which I call 'Art vs Artist,' reflects my 2024 journey. It captures my attempt to embrace consistency and show up to the page every day. You will see a mix of quick gesture drawings, detailed studies, and experiments with alcohol markers.

I believe art is about sharing our shared humanity. This is why I love live event sketching and teaching workshops. When I draw at an event or lead a group through Chor Bazaar, I am not just teaching technique. I am showing people how to look at the world differently. I want my clients and students to understand that a shaky line or a smudge is not a failure. It is a sign of life.

If you are interested in having me sketch at your next gathering or if you want to join one of my private urban sketching sessions, my process is simple and transparent. We work with what is available, focus on observation, and create something honest that you can hold in your hands long after the event is over.

I'm Shirish. I sketch to document life as it happens, not to create perfect photos. If you're looking for art that feels raw, honest, and handmade, we should talk.
