Sculptural Exteriors and Facades for Modern Homes

We design building exteriors by balancing raw materiality and structural volume, creating homes that are as responsive to the climate as they are visually striking.

For the SR Residence, I sculpted the facade with scooped-out volumes and textured screens, creating a dynamic interplay between solid and void. This approach allows for interesting indoor-outdoor experiences while maintaining a strong, modern presence.

A wider perspective of the SR Residence, showcasing how the stone and concrete facade integrates with the landscape. The design balances monumental form with the human scale of a private home, complete with a lush terrace and floor-to-ceiling glazing.

This residence facade is a study in modern minimalism, layering raw concrete, expansive glass, and rich wooden textures. The composition of stacked volumes and integrated planters creates a home that is both geometrically pure and harmoniously blended with its natural surroundings.

The 'House of Courtyards' features a facade that integrates dark concrete textures with vertical wooden slats. This material contrast provides visual depth and responds to the climate by creating shaded, semi-enclosed spaces.

Another view of the 'House of Courtyards' residence, highlighting the interplay of materials. The design uses landscaped terraces and strategic openings to ensure the home is both private and connected to its environment.

This minimalist residence uses a warm metal slat screen as a key facade element, balancing the solidity of the concrete structure. The elevated volume creates a sheltered space below while rooftop greenery softens the clean architectural lines.

Named 'Slice of Heaven', this apartment building facade uses stacked, offset volumes to create private, deep-set balconies. Each unit is given a connection to the outdoors, with integrated planters that bring a layer of green to the concrete structure.

About this collection

When we design a facade, we analyze the local sun and wind path to determine where to place solid volumes and where to introduce screens. This ensures that the building remains climatologically responsive while maintaining privacy, rather than simply applying a decorative layer to the structure.

At Vivospace, we treat the exterior of a building as a sculptural object that must actively participate in its environment. We move away from flat, static elevations. Instead, we create depth through cantilevers, recessed balconies, and material transitions—using raw concrete, timber slats, and stone to break up the mass.

Our approach is grounded in the specific context of the site. We do not apply one style to every project; we evaluate how the structure interacts with the surrounding landscape and urban fabric. Screens and slats are not just for visual interest; they serve as passive shading devices that allow ventilation while reducing thermal gain. This is vital for maintaining comfort in the Bengaluru climate.

Materiality remains central to our process. The juxtaposition of dark grey marble with warm wood, or terracotta with glass, allows us to anchor the building within its setting. We often incorporate integrated greenery and vertical gardens to soften the hard edges of modern architecture. Whether we are working on a luxury villa or a multi-unit apartment complex, our goal is to manage the boundary between public and private space, creating a front elevation that is both imposing and welcoming.
