About this collection
These pieces are more than just storage; they are a bridge between tradition and daily use. My barni jars are built to be airtight, keeping your spices fresh, while our ceramic dabras—a nod to our filter coffee culture—are fired to handle daily heat. Whether you are gifting a set or upgrading your own counter, you are getting items made to be used, not just admired.
For over a decade, my focus has been simple: how do we make craft useful again? When I first started working with the 200-year-old lac-turnery technique, it was often pigeonholed as a toy craft. I wanted to change that narrative.
Materials & Process
Our wooden kitchenware is turned from medicinal wood, finished with natural, non-toxic vegetable dyes applied via hand-lathe. This creates a glossy, durable surface that is safe for food and kitchen environments. We pair these wooden accents with our range of ceramic ware, sourced from small maker clusters in Pondicherry, to bring a balanced aesthetic to your dining space.
Design Philosophy
Design should not shout. Our barni jars, inspired by the pickle containers from my childhood, are not just for decoration. They are built with an airtight mechanism to ensure they actually protect your ingredients. Similarly, our ceramic filter coffee dabra sets are designed with the perfect rim and weight for that morning ritual.
Why This Matters
You are not just buying a jar or a mug; you are supporting a shift in how we value Indian craft. When you pick up a piece here, you are getting something that has travelled from a maker's workshop to your home, carrying a story of 15 years of attachment to the craft. We do not just sell things; we share the joy of having just enough.
Varnam Craft Collective
I am Karthik, and I started Varnam because I wanted to see craft move out of the toy box and onto our kitchen counters. We do not believe in mass-producing kitchenware; instead, I work directly with makers to create pieces that feel like memories.
